Recently, Kamala Harris decided to engage in a public appearance of fanciful preening at the 2025 Met Gala, in the company of her husband Doug Emhoff. Rather than employing her time to effectively tackle the big issues facing the nation, she instead chose to rub elbows with the elite in a lavish event which is far removed from the everyday experience of ordinary Americans.
This was the first time that Harris made the decision to attend the Met Gala, notably for a night geared towards celebrating the aspects of Black culture and fashion. However, instead of focusing on communicating with everyday citizens, she participated in a night that was undoubtedly divorced from the reality of the common people.
Harris, the former Vice President, showed a lack of focus by joining an evening of glamour and glitz while the nation grappled with pressing issues. She did not even have the courtesy to meet the audience and walk the iconic carpet of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.
Choosing to mark the event, she arrived in an inordinately extravagant Off-White dress designed by IB Kamara. Meanwhile, the world was busy dealing with real-life challenges. Her dress, an opulent black-and-white number, had peculiar design touches such as an asymmetric neckline and a flowing sleeve that sprawled over the floor.
Having chosen to make a statement that surely astonished many, the gown was precisely tailored from high-end cady silks, conveying an intimidatingly rich manner. On another note, the evening saw Harris donning an emerald green ring and earrings, adding subtle color pops to her ostentatious outfit.
Emhoff wore a fine suit from Brunello Cucinelli, joining his wife for the ceremonious occasion. Once again affirming the disconnect, the couple valued a night of high-end fashion over discussing the heartfelt concerns of the American populace.
The Met Gala 2025 theme was rather convenient for someone like Harris, who throughout her political career, has shown an inclination to parade with bold, colorful power suits. Rather than using her clothes to bring positive change, she chooses moments like these to demonstrate her personal indulgences.
As part of her flamboyant repertoire, Harris opted for different vibrant suits when she posed for her Vogue cover in 2021. Unfortunately, the soon-to-be Vice President for Joe Biden found it more critical to express her fashion sense than tackling the imminent challenges of her new position.
One of the blaring outfits included a powder blue suit. An overly casual pair of black and white Converse Chuck Taylors accompanied this. The shoes were visibly featured under her ankle-length trousers, a questionable fashion choice that drew unnecessary public attention.
This year’s gala was hosted by an array of celebrities such as Colman Domingo, Lewis Hamilton, Pharrell Williams, A$AP Rocky, and, of course, Anna Wintour. Instead of them rallying for a cause, their platform was used to purely celebrate superficiality and luxurious indulgence.
Interestingly, the Costume Institute’s spring exhibit was inspired by the book ‘Slaves to Fashion’, exploring Black dandyism through the ages. The focus should have been on cultural enrichment and education, yet most chose to parade in their most elaborate and extravagant attire.
With the museum indicating that the exhibit presented an examination of Black style from the 18th century up to present, the situation at the gala was ironically distanced from this goal. The primary focus of the stars in attendance shifted from interpretation of the theme to showcasing their over-the-top interpretations and fashion statements.
Huge stars like Quinta Brunson, Rihanna, Demi Moore, Megan Thee Stallion, and Sabrina Carpenter were in attendance. This star-studded event could prove beneficial for discussing important topics publicly. Yet, it was marred by conspicuous displays of wealth, exuberant fashion, and an overtly self-absorbed atmosphere.
It baffles many how such events are considered beneficial in any real sense. In reality, such nights only serve to further widen the gap between elitists like Harris and the everyday American, whom she was elected to serve and represent. Despite this, she chooses to revel in the luxuries of her high-power position rather than using it to bring about positive change.
The missteps of an individual like Harris in the public eye demonstrate a pressing issue all on its own. The fact that she chose to spend her time at such an extravagant event while countless people wrestle with real-world crises further paints her image as detached from the reality of those she has sworn to represent.
With this, it becomes clearer that ordinary citizens’ lives and concerns are starkly different from those who occupy positions of power. One can only hope that future leaders will prioritize the issues experienced by everyday Americans instead of prancing around in designer dresses at events like the Met Gala.
