In the foreseeable future, the nation anticipates Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. to divulge plans of discontinuing the recommendation for COVID-19 vaccinations for children and expectant mothers. This was disclosed by Leland Lehrman, the Director General of a novel think-tank affiliated with Make America Healthy Again, known as the MAHA Institute. During an inaugural day-long event of the institute, Lehrman announced, ‘It’s today that the secretary will reveal the HHS and the CDC’s decision to discontinue routine COVID vaccinations for children and expectant mothers.’
The freshly instituted MAHA Institute is a latest offshoot organization. Its kickoff event showcased myriad personalities known for their contentious opinions. The decision by HHS to cease their long-standing advice for children above the age of six months and pregnant individuals to receive approved COVID vaccinations embodies yet another instance of the department, under RFK Jr.’s stewardship, prefering a doubtful narrative on the effectiveness and risks of vaccines.
The prospective decision by the Health Department to cease advocating for the COVID-19 vaccine for expectant women, teenagers, and children might potentially expose immunocompromised individuals nationwide to increased risk. This step could ‘influence the people’s choice to opt for the vaccine.’ Should HHS stop endorsing regular vaccinations for the stated segments, insurance firms ‘would not need to cover these vaccines any longer.’
Kennedy has been known for perpetuating inaccuracies related to vaccines, promoting unscientific remedies, and inducing skepticism towards widely accepted immunizations. Pertinently, in 2021, RFK Jr. petitioned the federal government to withdraw its emergency approval for all COVID vaccines, acting on behalf of a group advocating against the scheduled vaccine regimen for children.
Kennedy and his department have attempted to question the credibility of research by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The CDC’s results demonstrated that the rise in autism diagnosis is predominantly due to expanded screening and identification among ‘previously less recognised groups.’
In March, the CDC decided to reduce the funds available for community and state health programs, which included immunizations and children’s vaccinations. Then in May, a new decision demanded that all forthcoming vaccines must be evaluated in comparison with placebo— a stipulation that would likely delay some vaccines’ rollout and make the approval process more intricate.
Kennedy is leaving a mark with his handling of the continuing measles epidemic that began in West Texas. The Texas Department of State Health Services reported that 718 confirmed cases have been identified from the end of January, with two confimed mortalities – both young girls.
In the face of escalating cases due to unvaccinated individuals spreading the deadly disease, Kennedy persists in advocating unproven theories about combatting measles without immunization. Kennedy unveiled during a deposition before a Congressional committee that should he have a child in this day and age, he would ‘probably’ decide to inoculate them for measles.
However, he also conveyed, ‘I don’t believe people should be basing their medical decisions off my advice.’
