High-ranking officials risk national security with careless communication

In the interest of safeguarding its computer network, my place of work mandates periodic password changes. The intent is to provide a robust defense against fraudsters, hackers, and other threats that can potentially disrupt our operations. Additionally, we participate in regular online training modules to hone our defenses against cyber-attacks, diligently updating our knowledge about a rapidly evolving threat landscape.

These training exercises stress the criticality of protecting proprietary and sensitive information. They caution about the dangers of sharing this information on platforms with potentially compromised or insufficient security measures. Participation in these training modules reflects the company’s robust compliance regime, which strives to preclude any malicious or inadvertent actions that could potentially harm our operations.

One of the dominating themes is that sharing company secrets on easily compromised platforms or devices could result in very serious repercussions. For instance, if I were to inadvertently download a virus that disrupts the company’s network, the impact could be devastating.

Surprisingly, high-ranking officials such as the Secretary of Defense, Vice President, National Security Adviser, and Director of National Security flouted these basic principles. They nonchalantly shared unambiguously classified information on an encrypted messaging app. The audacity of these individuals to then lie about their actions under oath before Congress was revealed with the revelation of the chat transcripts.

The substantiating evidence overwhelmingly indicates that these self-proclaimed leaders of our country’s defense and security apparatus could be in direct violation of the Espionage Act. Moreover, their blatant disregard for truth while testifying before Congress amounts to perjury. In any previous administration, these oversights would have been severely dealt with, perhaps even resulting in prosecution.

Adding to this saga of hypocrisy, an unelected billionaire, famous for his role in the electric car industry, has been found guilty of unjustly firing stellar civil servants. This aforementioned action exposes the cognitive dissonance inherent in the ‘MAGA movement,’ as it once again demonstrates the movement’s inability to live up to its vociferous posturing about patriotism and dedicated public service.

Despite their alleged devotion to the nation, the followers of this movement pay little heed to pressing issues such as governmental reform, national security, and the protection of our servicemen and servicewomen. Smokescreens of lies and political posturing stand in stark contrast with the reality of the threats that the nation faces.

In the midst of these unfolding events, a paramount national security issue remains unaddressed. The leaked chat involving top officials unwittingly exposed sensitive operational details, possibly putting the lives of U.S. Air Force pilots at risk. Any eavesdropper tapping into this communication might provide adversaries with valuable intelligence about pending military actions.

The indifferent exposure of such sensitive military information underscores an alarming disregard for Operation Security (OPSEC), a key principle in military strategy. The propagation of data that can potentially jeopardize missions or endanger lives could have disastrous consequences. Yet, the individuals in question seem to be treating this matter with nonchalance.

The stalwarts safeguarding our nation are some of the most truthful, exemplary, dedicated, and courageous individuals I have had the privilege to know. Their virtues vary in degree, but they all stand head and shoulders above the officials who deliberately chose to perjure themselves.

These brave citizen-soldiers are the ones that keep us safe while we sleep soundly at night, trusting in them to stand watch over us. They deserve better than to be put in harm’s way by the careless actions of those entrusted with safeguarding national secrets.

In this disheartening saga, the glaring hypocrisy of the officials who lied under oath, the billionaire who took unjust action against dedicated civil servants, and the followers who turn a blind eye to pressing national security issues, is laid bare. This reeks of an egregious disregard for the values, principles, and practices that safeguard our nation and the lives of the men and women who serve it.

We must remember that our nation’s security, the lives of our soldiers, and the principles of honesty and integrity are worth far more than petty politics. We must hold those who have shown disregard for these principles accountable. There is no room for such unpatriotic behavior in any administration, present or future.
