In a symbolic yet powerful move, the U.S. House of Representatives has voted to officially rename the Gulf of Mexico as the “Gulf of America,” embracing a push led by President Donald Trump to reassert American identity and pride in national landmarks. The bill passed narrowly, 211-206, with unified Democrat opposition and one Republican voting against it.
Introduced by Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, the legislation directs all federal agencies to begin updating official documents, maps, and navigational systems to reflect the new name. Supporters of the bill argue the renaming reinforces America’s sovereignty over its own waters and sends a clear message about who controls the vast economic and strategic resources along the Gulf coastline.
President Trump had already signed Executive Order 14172 in January, which initiated the change and also restored the historic name “Mount McKinley” to what had been rebranded as Denali under the Obama administration. The House vote now gives that order the weight of legislation, solidifying the name change and pushing it closer to permanence.
“The Gulf belongs to America — it’s time we name it that way,” Greene said in a statement, calling the change a “bold declaration of American strength, independence, and leadership.”
Critics on the Left have dismissed the move as symbolic, accusing Republicans of focusing on gestures rather than policy. But supporters counter that national identity and pride are critical in a time of global uncertainty and cultural division.
Some federal agencies and private sector companies have already begun phasing in the term “Gulf of America” since the executive order took effect. While international acceptance remains to be seen, the domestic transition is gaining momentum.
The bill now moves to the Senate, where its passage will depend on whether Republicans can secure enough votes to overcome potential procedural hurdles. Still, the House vote marks a major step in Trump’s broader effort to restore traditional American values and assert national dignity across government institutions and geographic terminology.
