An Iranian cleric issued a fiery threat against President Donald Trump on Thursday, calling for violence against the American leader in remarks broadcast on Iranian state television.
Ayatollah Abdollah Javadi Amoli urged supporters to remain united against the United States and Israel and openly called for retaliation.
“We are now on the verge of a great test and we must be careful to fully preserve this unity, to fully preserve this alliance,” Amoli said before calling for “the shedding of Zionist blood, the shedding of Trump’s blood.”
Invoking the “Imam of the time,” the cleric added, “Fight the oppressive America, his blood is on my shoulders.”
The comments came a day after Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth revealed that a commander tied to an alleged Iranian plot to assassinate Trump had been eliminated during the ongoing military campaign against Iran.
“While that was not the focus of the effort by any stretch of the imagination, in fact never raised by the president or anybody else, I ensured and others ensured that those who were responsible for that were eventually part of the target list,” Hegseth said during a Pentagon press briefing.
Meanwhile, tensions escalated further after an Iranian warship was reportedly sunk off the coast of Sri Lanka during a U.S. naval strike.
Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi condemned the incident, accusing the United States of carrying out an attack in international waters.
“The U.S. has perpetrated an atrocity at sea, 2,000 miles away from Iran’s shores,” Araghchi said. “Frigate Dena, a guest of India’s Navy carrying almost 130 sailors, was struck in international waters without warning.”
According to Sri Lankan authorities, rescue crews pulled dozens of sailors from the water following the strike. Sri Lankan navy spokesman Buddhika Sampath said 32 survivors were rescued and taken to a hospital, while another 87 bodies were recovered.
Officials from the United States Department of Defense later shared footage of the attack online.
Hegseth described the strike as a historic moment for the U.S. Navy.
“An American submarine sunk an Iranian warship that thought it was safe in international waters,” he said. “Instead, it was sunk by a torpedo — quiet death — the first sinking of an enemy ship by a torpedo since World War II.”
Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Dan Caine said the operation demonstrated the reach of American military power.
“It was an incredible demonstration of America’s global reach,” Caine said, adding that the strike showed the unique capabilities of the United States military.
