James Comey, the former director of the Federal Bureau of Investigations, was recently queried by members of the Secret Service in regard to a social media post designated ‘8647’. The administration took the post to be a menacing threat towards President Trump, while Comey insisted it was merely an expression of political discontent. The Department of Homeland Security Secretary, Kristi Noem, took to social media on the following Friday affirming the occurrence of the interview. Noem emphasized her commitment to safeguarding the president, emphasizing that the investigation is a matter currently under progress.
Representation for Comey opted to not comment on the interrogation. Comey, a voiced detractor of Trump, expunged the controversial post – featuring seashells arranged to form ‘8647’- in merely a few hours. Explaining his point of view, he specified that his intended message was political rather than aggressive. He expressed in a posting: ‘It never crossed my mind that some people could link those numbers to violence, so I removed the post in my staunch opposition to any form of violence.’
Comey’s actions didn’t pass unnoticed by Trump, who declared in a Fox News interview that he held a firm conviction that Comey fully comprehended the implications of his social media post. According to Trump, even a child could discern the hint of ‘assassination’ in his message. ‘Despite his incompetence, he knew what he was implying,’ Trump asserted. The Director of National Intelligence, Tulsi Gabbard, also voiced her concerns, proclaiming that Comey should face incarceration.
Gabbard further expressed her heightened concerns for Trump’s safety and well-being, noting previous attempts on his life. In her discussion on Fox News, she mentioned: ‘Given the alarming incidents we’ve previously witnessed, I am genuinely worried about the president’s life, and firmly stand by the belief that Comey should face consequential accountability for his actions.’
Trump’s presidential campaign in 2024 came with its share of precarious situations. An assassination attempt in July left him with an injury on his ear during a rally held in Butler, Pennsylvania. A shooter targeted him from a neighboring rooftop, but was eliminated by the swift action of the Secret Service’s snipers.
Two months following that, another malevolent attempt was made while Trump was enjoying a game of golf in Florida. A rifle aimed at his security personnel was detected before any harm could be done. The suspect attempted escape, but was apprehended and subsequently charged with the attempted assassination of a presidential candidate.
The term ‘eight six’ that stirred this controversy is commonly used in the restaurant business, symbolizing a refusal or a denial of service. Additionally, it can signify the removal of an item from a menu, or the discontinuation, rejection, or discarding of something. The use of the term can be traced as far back as the 1930s, according to Merriam-Webster.
Republican political figures have previously been known to incorporate the term ’86’ within their social media communications. Not too long ago, a former congressman of the Republican party from Florida, Matt Gaetz, utilized ’86’ in a social media post of his own. His message contained the names of previous leaders of his party – McCarthy, McDaniel, and McConnell – where he alluded to brighter days for the party in the wake of their departures.
Gaetz’s use of ’86’ was defended as being dissimilar to Comey’s usage. In a conversation with the Independent, he explained that his usage was reflective of past occurrences, as opposed to Comey’s call for potential future actions. ‘These are different contexts,’ Gaetz insisted.
In the year 2022, a post on social media from conservative activist Jack Posobiec included the directional ’86 46′. Given that Joe Biden was the 46th president, it was interpreted as an apparent nod towards him. When solicited for a commentary by the Independent, Posobiec declined to respond.
