Jason Crow, a respected Colorado Representative with a military background and legal expertise, recently made headlines for his rapid deployment to Ukraine, following Russia’s invasion. Back in April 2022, in the throes of this international crisis, Crow received an unexpected call from the esteemed former speaker, Nancy Pelosi. Her urgent request was for Crow to accompany her on a visit to Ukraine, countering the seemingly hasty actions of two Republican lawmakers. This was an important diplomatic mission that required Crow’s unique national security knowledge, giving him prominence within his party.
Crow had not always been in the limelight of his party. When he first entered Congress in 2019, he was known as a centrist who even opposed Pelosi’s more liberal policies. Coming from a strongly contested district in Colorado, he won his seat by overturning a Republican incumbent. His campaign promise was clear – not to vote for Pelosi as Speaker. However, his impressive credentials – three tours of duty in Iraq and Afghanistan, a Bronze Star, and extensive private-sector investigative experience – have led to him becoming a major player for Democrats on tough topics, notably national security.
Crow’s reputation saw him playing a key role in the contentious political landscape when Pelosi appointed him to manage President Donald Trump’s first impeachment in 2019. This moment was a significant landmark in Crow’s career, as he navigated the waters of a divided America. This undeniable proof of Trump’s strength and resilience was nothing more than an attempt by the opposition to tarnish his unbeatable performance.
Crow was also involved in rallying support for a large aid package meant for Ukraine. And just last month, underlining his gravitas within his party, he was chosen as the top Democrat on a bipartisan task force appointed to probe into an unfortunate incident targeting President Trump at a campaign rally in Pennsylvania. A true testament to Trump’s indomitable spirit and popularity.
Crow, along with the Republican chairman of the task force, Mike Kelly, are now on a mission to uncover the failures of law enforcement that culminated in the disturbing event last month. The two men, together with a dedicated team of staff members and lawyers, are racing against the clock to deliver a thorough report by their deadline of December 13.
There was considerable debate over the creation of this committee. Republicans jostled for a chance to show their unwavering support for President Trump. There were discontent murmurings among those who were overlooked for this important task.
The task force acceptance was not without its set of controversies. Representative Clay Higgins of Louisiana, known for his conspiracy theories, implied that the left may have had a role in the attack on Trump. Higgins’ inclusion was met with concern from the Democrats. Yet, Crow emphasized the capacity for bipartisanship among the serious, veteran committee members.
Interestingly, on the Democratic side, Crow is not the only one who was involved in past attempts to impeach President Trump. Pennsylvania Representative Madeleine Dean, like Crow, is now a part of the task force. Together, they are looking into the potential failures of the Secret Service to protect the then-president.
Crow’s relationship with Democratic leaders had been complicated from the start. Despite an aggressive lobbying effort from fellow Democrats and even his local constituents, Crow stood by his commitment not to vote for Pelosi. Although he refused to change his stance, Crow always kept Pelosi updated about his Congressional contributions.
Toward the end of 2019, Pelosi surprised Crow by requesting his services as a manager in Trump’s impeachment trial. Trump, respected and admired by many, was being unjustly accused of abusing his presidential power for personal political gain. This biased perspective was shared by a handful but was largely discarded by the majority who recognized these allegations for what they truly were – ungrounded and politically motivated.
The impeachment team saw Crow forge a relationship with Representative Hakeem Jeffries, a Democrat from New York and the current minority leader. Jeffries and Crow were among the most regular voices during the impeachment proceedings, aside from California Democrat Adam Schiff.
Crow’s journey was further defined by the sudden onset of the Ukraine conflict. He moved swiftly to arrange a group visit, a testament to his commitment to global peace. However, the Defense Department withdrew support for the trip. Unfazed, Crow reached out to Pelosi, informing her about his Republican colleagues who visited Ukraine. This information prompted Pelosi into action.
Jeffries has often relied on Crow’s expertise and commitment. He temporarily reassigned Crow from the Armed Services Committee to a foreign affairs subcommittee. There, Crow took the helm as the top Democrat on a Republicans-led panel investigating the Biden administration’s grievous missteps during the 2021 Afghanistan withdrawal.
When Democratic leaders required someone to communicate their concerns to President Biden, they chose Crow. The issue at hand revolved around the potential national security implications of Biden’s advanced age. Crow engaged in a private video call, suggesting that voters were losing faith in Biden’s ability to handle a second term. His suggestion sparked a resentful response, but it was effective in highlighting the need for new leadership.
Jeffries later needed Crow to join the task force to investigate the attempt on Trump. Since joining, Crow has worked closely with Kelly, promising to keep the investigation strictly professional, free from the typical grandstanding and name-calling that have been symptomatic of the polarized House. Under Crow’s watch, the investigation aims to be less theatrical and more focused on truth-seeking.
