Vice President JD Vance traveled Friday to North Carolina, one of the most competitive battlegrounds in the upcoming midterm elections, to promote President Donald Trump’s economic agenda and argue that the administration is improving Americans’ financial outlook.
Speaking to supporters in Rocky Mount, Vance contrasted the current administration’s policies with those of former President Joe Biden.
“The president who caused an affordability crisis was Joe Biden, and the president who has made the American people $1,300 richer is Donald J. Trump,” Vance told the crowd.
With cost of living concerns dominating voter priorities ahead of the November elections, the vice president focused much of his speech on pocketbook issues.
Vance argued that tax credits and economic policies implemented during Trump’s first year back in office have helped ease the financial burden on families.
“A year and a month of President Trump’s leadership is that the average American family, while they lost $3,200 when Biden was president, they’ve gained about $1,300 while Donald Trump was president,” Vance said.
The vice president has become one of the administration’s leading voices on economic messaging as Republicans try to maintain control of Congress.
During the speech, Vance highlighted several economic indicators he said show improvement under Trump’s leadership.
“We have seen new home purchases rise to their highest level in five years, since the last time Donald Trump was president,” he said.
He also pointed to falling rental prices and tax refunds expected to benefit families in North Carolina.
“We have seen the cost of rents drop for six months in a row,” Vance said. “We have seen the average tax refund that will come to the people of North Carolina, about $3,700 per family.”
Vance also claimed interest rates have dropped to their lowest levels since Trump previously served as president.
Despite those claims, polls indicate many voters remain uneasy about the economy.
A recent Fox News survey found that only 30 percent of voters view the economy positively, while many continue to express concern about the costs of groceries, housing, utilities, healthcare, and fuel.
The Trump administration has argued that some economic pressures, particularly higher gas prices, are tied to the ongoing conflict with Iran and will ease once the situation stabilizes.
“My friends, the president is impatient,” Vance told the audience. “He’s the most impatient person I have ever met.”
“He constantly is pressing on the gas. He wants us to do more,” Vance said. “I stand here proud to say after the first year, we are rebuilding the American dream.”
North Carolina is expected to be a key battleground in the midterms.
The state’s Senate race is especially competitive following the retirement of Republican Senator Thom Tillis.
Democrats nominated former Governor Roy Cooper during their primary, while Republicans selected former Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Whatley as their candidate.
Vance sharply criticized Cooper during his speech.
“Roy Cooper is one of these people who clearly cares way more for foreign countries than he does the United States of America,” Vance said.
“You see the passion in his voice when he talks about protecting illegal aliens,” the vice president added. “You’ll never hear that passion when he’s talking about the people in this room.”
Vance also targeted Democratic Representative Don Davis, who is running for reelection in a competitive House district.
“Don Davis voted against cutting taxes on those making $100,000 a year and voted against going to war against violent criminals,” Vance said.
“Don Davis is not a man that stands for the people of this state or district,” he continued. “He does exactly what Nancy Pelosi tells him to do.”
Republican Laurie Buckhout, a military veteran, won the GOP primary earlier this month and will face Davis in a rematch after losing to him by about 1.5 percentage points in the 2024 election.
Vance told the crowd Republicans are determined to win the seat in November and strengthen their hold on Congress.
