In a recent discussion on the issue of perceived bias in digital platforms, Joe Rogan expressed his backing for Elon Musk’s endeavors with the X platform. Rogan elucidated his perspective that the X platform, under Musk’s reign, has crafted a more equitable digital space in terms of political ideation. In episode #2242 of the Joe Rogan Experience this past month (December 2024), Rogan invited Bert Sorin, a noted athlete, hunter, and advocate for the wellness of military veterans, as his guest. The dialogue during this session importantly highlighted Elon Musk’s venture of assuming control of Twitter in 2022.
Musk, an entrepreneur with South African roots based in the U.S., had later given a new identity to Twitter, rechristening it as X. Musk has been vocal regarding his perception that Twitter held a certain degree of bias favoring left-wing perspectives, leading to an apparent censorship of right-wing voices. Advancing further, Musk assures that he has eradicated any such prejudice from X, advocating for a platform where diverse opinions can coexist harmoniously.
As Rogan engaged with Sorin, he gestured toward the frequent complaints voiced by individuals who have migrated to Bluesky, a social media platform drawing parallels with X. These users express discontent about a seeming right-wing leaning in X under Musk’s guidance. Rogan humorously shares, ‘I persistently observe this allegation where migrating users assert that Elon not only illuminates right-wing perspectives but even endorses the right-wing fervor and transformed Twitter into a right-wing hub.’
Rogan firmly deflects these accusations, echoing, ‘No, not at all. What you now witness is an authentic reflection of our nation, which is fairly evenly split. You hadn’t seen this previously, given the habitual silencing of conservative voices.’ He continues, underlining that on the newly framed platform, both conservative and progressive voices can exist concurrently.
The twist in the tale, as Rogan puts it, is that the liberal avatars, spoiled by their previous monopoly, find it hard to accept this new reality. In a world where they have to contend with contrasting viewpoints, their erstwhile unchallenged hegemony is being challenged. ‘They’re grappling with the discomfort of encountering contrary ideologies that they can no longer suppress. The culture of silencing differing voices is slowly fading away, replaced by a new norm where individuals can openly express their personal ideologies.’
Rogan, noted commentator for UFC, hints at the fact that the so-called progressive circles are stepping out of their bubbles, facing the real-world truth, a mix and match of agreeing and disagreeing perspectives. He elaborates that the world doesn’t function as a dysfunctional echo chamber, where one would be indefinitely banned for voicing opinions like ‘a man cannot transform into a woman.’
In the same vein, Rogan recalls the instance when his friend Meghan Murphy faced a permanent ban from X for making a statement that was judged as transphobic by the powers that be. Observing from ringside, Rogan underscores that attempts by the extreme-left to suppress narrative strands that go against their belief system is a fundamentally flawed approach.
In the course of the JRE episode #2242, both Rogan and Sorin seemed to find common ground over the observation that certain quarters within the U.S. government have been purportedly infringing upon the freedom of speech and the First Amendment rights of the American constitution. Rogan revisited a statement made by U.S. businessman Marc Andreessen, highlighting two seminal moments that reshaped American politics.
The first of these two pivotal transformations was Elon Musk’s takeover of X in 2022. The second important incidence was the miraculous escape of the former President and President-elect Donald Trump from an assassination attempt staged in July of 2024.
Rogan indirectly suggests that his country may be in a troubled phase in the absence of public figures like Musk and Trump, who are projected to assume significant governmental roles in January 2025. To quote Rogan, ‘Their earlier deeds have already exposed an indifference towards the principles of freedom of speech and the First Amendment… The instance of Musk taking over Twitter indeed marked a revolutionary milestone in the history of digital discourses.’ His statement at the 2:35:05 mark of the podcast resonates clearly and firmly.
