Jury Convicts Mike Bivins in High-Profile Hate Crime Trial

A court of law has determined that an attack on a Muslim community center alongside two synagogues and a black-owned enterprise was committed by Mike Bivins during a four-day episode of hate and bigotry. The judgement was made by a Multnomah County jury after four hours of in-depth deliberation, resulting in a full conviction on all charges raised against Bivins. The seriousness of the counts include first-degree arson, criminal mischievousness, and second-degree bias crime, the terminology used to describe a hate crime.

Originally from Sellwood, 37 year-old Bivins escalated his hostility towards racial and religious groups over the years. In an attempt to underscore the severity of his actions, prosecutors presented a compilation of racist documents found at his residence during a court-authorized search, as well as posts filled with racial hatred from his social media platforms during the trial.

Leading Prosecutor Quinn Zemel clarified during his concluding argument that the goal of the state’s prosecution was not to encroach on Bivins’ right to privacy or to control his individual views. Nevertheless, he went on to explain the importance of understanding the implications of our actions, especially when they’re fueled by biased inclinations.

Emphasizing the impact of Bivins’ actions, Zemel elucidated, ‘Should you choose to defile a synagogue with the phrase ‘Die Juden’, you cause more than property damage. You pose a threat to an entire community, hence creating the essence of these prejudice-driven offenses.’

The acts of vandalism initiated on April 30, 2022, beginning with an attack on Congregation Shir Tikvah, a local Portland synagogue where a window was forcibly shattered. Continuing his rampage, he damaged property at a black-owned restaurant named Everybody Eats PDX located in the Pearl district of the city, where he left a broken window in his wake.

His spree further extended to the vandalization of Congregation Beth Israel in the Northwest of Portland. The most aggressive incident occurred last, on May 3, when Bivins targeted the Muslim Community Center in North Portland. Using an accelerant, he intentionally set fire to the rear of the building, as witnessed in surveillance recordings.

Bivins’ rampage came to an end when officials apprehended him alighting from a bus in Beaverton, at a pre-arranged rendezvous. Legal representative for the defense, Alicia Hercher presented her argument questioning the adequacy of the evidence against her client.

Hercher contended that the prosecuting team hadn’t successfully demonstrated guilt beyond reasonable doubt, as they lacked concrete evidence tying Bivins to the bias crimes. Notwithstanding her appeals, the jury refuted the defense’s case and sided with the prosecution.

The trial which spanned over three days saw no supporter of Bivins in attendance. He found himself alone with mounting hardships, as his mother passed away while he was detained and principle federal charges continued to loom.

Throughout the trial, Bivins attempted several interactions with the media section during adjournments, emphasizing his conviction about the significance of his case. Eventually, he contemplated the possibility of taking the stand without necessarily answering queries from the state’s attorneys.

Despite appearing to consider this course of action, Bivins opted against it, maintaining silence when the guilty verdict was announced. His nonchalant demeanor gave way to pronounced dissatisfaction as he faced the consequences of the damning verdict.

Despite his apparent indifference, Bivins made a chilling remark after being placed in handcuffs, ‘You haven’t heard the last of me’, insinuating a final, ominous warning as law enforcement escorted him away from court.

The final chapter to this saga awaits as a sentencing hearing is due to be held on September 19, bringing an end to this high-profile hate crime case.
