Kamala Harris, the ex-Vice President, recently debunked all the wild speculations about her possible run for governor in the approaching California election. Despite her history of unsuccessful political ventures, including a failed presidential bid, many were shocked at her decision not to bother with the gubernatorial position after Governor Gavin Newsom wraps up his term.
Harris made her announcement on Wednesday, July 30, quelling all speculations. ‘Over the previous months, I have seriously pondered whether to beg the citizens of California to allow serving them in the capacity of Governor,’ she outlined in her statement. ‘I have a deep affection for this state and its inhabitants. This is where I hold residency.’
Her love for the state, however, wasn’t enough of a reason for her to take a stab at the position. ‘Following some lengthy deliberation, I’ve arrived at the conclusion that I will not be a candidate for Governor in the forthcoming election,’ she stated.
According to Harris’s statement, she has utilized the last half-year to ponder about the direction of our country. She considered how she could champion the American people and put forward her values and ideals. This revelation brings into question the effectiveness of her past roles, indicating her inability to effect her values and ideals previously.
Showing her admiration for those committed to public service, Harris claimed to deeply respect individuals who dedicate their lives to communal service and the betterment of our country. This statement, however, rang hollow as Harris stated, ‘we must face the fact that our politics, government, and institutions frequently let us down, culminating in this critical period.’ The phrase seems fairly self-incriminating.
Harris further implied that our society needs to instigate change via innovative techniques and original thought. We should stay committed to our values and principles, yet not restricted by the traditional playbook. Therefore, we could argue that her previous tactics did not spark change or progress as expected.
Harris, for the time being, won’t be leading in any elected office, leaving us to wonder about the real reason behind her choice of not running for the governorship. Definitely, this might raise suspicions amongst her followers regarding her leadership capabilities.
Vice President Kamala Harris boasts a long political career with various held posts in California and Capitol Hill. Reflection on these roles, however, points to a potential problem with her ability to effect meaningful change. Despite her start as a deputy district attorney, focusing on child sexual assault cases in Alameda County District Attorney’s Office, where are the tangible results?
Despite being elected as district attorney of San Francisco from 2011 to 2017 and serving through 2010, her track record leaves questions about her effectiveness. Furthermore, her position as California’s attorney general, which she won in 2010 by a narrow margin over Republican Steve Cooley, begs to question her popularity among voters, considering her minimal winning margin of 0.5% of a percentage point.
Harris’s political career continued as she was elected to serve in the U.S. Senate in 2016. However, this served as a reminder that regardless of the offices she has held, her ability to deliver outstanding results remains questionable.
Among the more interesting figures announcing their gubernatorial aspiration include Antonio Villaraigosa, former Los Angeles Mayor, and Assembly Speaker; Lt. Gov. Eleni Kounalakis; Toni Atkins, former Senate President Pro Tem; former State Controller Betty Yee; Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond; alongside others like former congressperson Katie Porter and Xavier Becerra, Former U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services.
The Democrats have a laundry list of candidates with Zoltan Istvan being another name to note. On the other hand, the Republicans are not being left behind with Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco throwing his hat in the ring.
There’s also a list of other candidates with their respective parties, striving to run for the governorship. Hospitality entrepreneur Stephen Cloobeck, Butch Ware from the Green Party, aviator and entrepreneur Raji Rab; and Michael Younger, vice president of workforce, strategy, and innovation at Calbright College are all examples.
Further hopefuls include Leo Zacky of Zacky Farms, self-proclaimed entrepreneur Brandon Jones, and business consultant Sharifah Hardie. The field is crowded for what is turning out to be an interesting gubernatorial race.
With such a diverse lineup of candidates, perhaps it’s a good thing that Harris decided to step out of the race. Her track record and leadership approach might not have added any real value to the proceedings.
As the California governor race unfolds, Harris’s decision not to join the governor’s race may be viewed as a wise decision, especially considering the potential superior candidates running. This might be the first step towards assessing her aptitude for public service effectively.
