Kamala Harris stunned Jon Stewart on his podcast this week after she insisted Joe Biden was “fully competent” to serve another term, despite everything Americans saw leading up to and during the 2024 debate.
Harris appeared on Stewart’s show to promote her new book, “107 Days,” and reflected on her failed campaign. She said she regretted not drawing more contrast between herself and Biden — but still stood by his mental capacity, saying she believed he was fit for the job.
Stewart wasn’t buying it. When Harris claimed Biden was “fully competent,” Stewart paused and asked, “Do you really?”
“I do,” Harris replied, to which Stewart responded, “That surprises me, actually.”
Harris tried to argue that Biden’s meltdown on the debate stage didn’t mean he was unfit to govern. She said there’s a difference between being a candidate and being a president, calling the campaign trail a “marathon at a sprinter’s pace” that comes with nonstop attacks. She claimed Biden was weighed down by the pressures of campaigning while still holding office.
But Stewart pushed back, pointing out the obvious — if you can’t handle a campaign, how can you handle the presidency?
“I think it’s a hard case to make for people that he didn’t have the stamina to run, but he had the stamina to govern,” Stewart said, “because I think most people view the presidency as a marathon run at a sprint with tomatoes being thrown at you in terms of governance.”
Earlier in the conversation, Harris admitted that she chose not to pile on when questions about Biden’s mental decline were dominating headlines. She said she cared about him and didn’t want to add to the criticism, but now realizes she underestimated how much the public wanted to see her stand on her own.
“I do realize also in reflection that I did not fully understand how big of an issue it was for some people, for me to distinguish myself from him,” she said. “Knowing what I know now, I would’ve probably approached it a bit differently.”
This interview marks the second time in recent days that Harris has doubled down on defending Biden’s ability to serve — even after admitting he didn’t want to debate and was clearly “off” leading up to it. She’s now walking a tightrope between defending her former running mate and rewriting history to suit her own political future.
