Over the recent weekend, a strong statement was issued against the previous Trump administration and Robert F. Kennedy Jr. by Kerry Kennedy, Robert’s sister. The reason for this discord was the release of a substantial batch of papers – a total of 10,000 documents, amongst which were explicit autopsy pictures – pertinent to the assassination of Robert F. Kennedy, the ex-senator, and potential Democratic presidential contender. One can’t help but question if Ms. Kennedy’s public display of dissatisfaction a strategic attempt to protect the longstanding Democratic heritage of the Kennedy family as Robert Jr., under his role as the Health and Human Resources secretary in Trump’s cabinet, strives to reform or, some might say, destabilize the national healthcare structure. Or is it simply an emotional outcry from a daughter who didn’t wish to see such vivid imagery of her deceased father made public?
On the previous Friday, the Trump administration made public a lot of formerly classified papers connected to the assassination of Robert F. Kennedy, which took place on June 5, 1968. The disclosed documents comprised statements from eyewitnesses, photographs of the crime scene, and personal, handwritten notes by Sirhan Sirhan, the convicted assassin currently serving a life sentence in a prison in California. Recalling the impact of the tragedy, Kerry Kennedy stated, ‘Being an eight-year-old girl and losing your father to a gunman was tragic. The violence was too much for me.’ she admitted, ‘Now, following the revelation on Good Friday, the pain resurfaces in a new, unimaginable manner.’
Referring to the released autopsy photos, Kerry Kennedy said, ‘Whenever I, or my siblings, my children, or my nieces or nephews come across the pictures of my father – the man who used to hold me every morning and kissed me to bed – we won’t see the man we remember. We will be faced with lurid, detailed images of his disfigured body from an autopsy. This is a tough reality to bear.’
Robert F. Kennedy Jr. had previously advocated, while on the campaign, for the release of these documents as well as those relating to the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, his uncle. Doubting that Sirhan Sirhan could have conducted the murder single-handedly, Robert Jr. had visited the assassin in jail in 2018 and had advocated for his release. The parole board in California advised releasing Sirhan in 2022 but Governor Newsom disapproved.
By revealing the RFK documents to the public, we are taking a necessary step towards restoring faith in the US government,’ Robert F. Kennedy Jr. expressed in a statement. Sirhan’s personal letters showed his negative feelings towards Mr. Kennedy. One of the letters stated ‘RFK needs to be eliminated, just like his brother.’ His handwritten notebooks also contained phrases like ‘RFK must die.’
However, other evidence might feed into conspiracy theories. Notes hint at a woman in a polka-dot dress and the voiced phrase ‘we shot him’ at the crime scene. FBI files discuss interviews with individuals touring Israel in May of 1968, a month prior to the assassination, where they claimed overhearing a tour guide mentioning Mr. Kennedy being shot.
‘For the first time, the American public will be privy to the federal government’s investigation following the assassination of Senator Robert F. Kennedy which occurred almost six decades ago’, the National Intelligence director pronounced in a statement. ‘I would like to express my deepest gratitude to the Kennedy family for their support.’ However, Kerry Kennedy disagrees. ‘I did not endorse this,’ she retorted.
Ms. Kennedy issued an emotional rejoinder to the Trump administration: ‘The Trump administration might assume that they can silence us with pain, but we will rise above it, more resolute and resilient than ever before.’ She also expressed her empathy for other suffering families. ‘Think of the innumerable families disrupted by the renewal of separation policies. Ponder over the government employees who were laid off and those who continue to dwell in fear,’ she argued.
Regarding her brother Robert’s endorsement of Trump, Kerry expressed disappointment and perceived it as a contradiction to their family and their father’s principles. ‘Bobby’s recent Trump endorsement is a departure from the values dear to our father and our family. It’s the unhappy conclusion to a sad tale,’ she divulged.
In reaction to November’s election, Ms. Kennedy confessed, ‘I love Bobby.’ Nonetheless, when queried about her trust in him handling the nation’s healthcare, she responded with a straightforward ‘No.’
