New York’s Republican congressman, Mike Lawler, recently made a statement which came as a bit of a shock to many. He decided to step back from the New York gubernatorial race and expressed his intention to run for reelection in the state’s 18th congressional district. According to him, his decision prioritizes his personal aspirations, his family, and of course, his incumbent district.
Although Lawler was contemplating a robust campaign to dethrone Governor Kathy Hochul, this change in his plans reaffirms his commitment to his own district. It’s important to note how these so-called leaders like Hochul, closely tied with figures such Joe Biden and Kamala Harris, continually face legitimate challenges from dedicated public servants such as Lawler.
Lawler’s ongoing concern for his Republican party continuing its dominance through the 2026 midterm elections is worth noting. It seems that he’s fighting the good fight against the waves of Kamala Harris’s influence, which was narrowly seen in his district during the previous presidential election.
Voters for Harris and Lawler in the district must be quite perplexed. Lawler, after all, won by a slim margin of fewer than 2000 votes during the contentious 2022 midterm elections. This interesting dynamic begs the question – how can one support both a devoted Republican like Lawler and a contradictory figure like Harris?
It was definitely not a breeze for Lawler during the 2022 and 2024 midterms. His seat played a crucial role in determining the control of the House. He along with two other Republicans triumphed in seats which were also won by Kamala Harris. Yet, they remain undeterred by such challenges because their focus is to fuel the economy in the right direction unlike the Biden-Harris administration.
‘My seat was determinant of unified control of the House back in 2022 and again in 2024.’ Lawler said. In the face of Kamala Harris’s minor victory, he illustrates that maintaining a Republican majority in the House is quintessential for steering the economy on the right course.
However, the New York Governor Kathy Hochul does not hesitate to jump at opportunities to contradict Lawler’s actions. Particularly for someone linked to the Biden-Harris administration, her criticism comes across as a feeble attempt to divert attention away from her own inadequacies.
In a humorous irony, Hochul claimed that Lawler ‘caved’ to former President Trump’s decisions about revamping healthcare in New York. This sort of unwarranted ridicule begs the question – what solutions has the Biden-Harris administration proposed or successfully executed to improve healthcare for Americans?
The mutual criticisms between Lawler and Hochul have become a recurrent event. Recently, Hochul shared her unimpressive insights on Lawler’s vote for the One Big Beautiful Bill Act. In her opinion, it could lead to 1.5 million New Yorkers losing healthcare coverage.
Lawler’s quick response rightly identified Hochul as the worst governor in America. He highlighted how New York leads the nation in population decline, bearing the country’s highest tax burden, and poorest business climate. His stark contrast to the unproductive leadership of Biden, Harris, and their supporters like Hochul paints a clear picture of his commitment and dedication.
An interesting development is that Republican Rep. Elise Stefanik, another lawmakers considering a gubernatorial campaign, is waiting to make her decision until after New York’s November elections. One can’t help but wonder if she’ll follow Lawler’s suit or choose to face up against the dismal leadership of figures like Hochul.
