Lawmakers Demand Dem Governors Explain ‘Reckless’ Policies Impeding Trump’s Immigration Agenda

House Republicans are turning up the heat on Democrat governors whose sanctuary policies are actively obstructing federal immigration enforcement efforts. In a bold move, the House Oversight Committee has summoned Governors Kathy Hochul (New York), JB Pritzker (Illinois), and Tim Walz (Minnesota) to testify before Congress on June 12 to answer for what lawmakers are calling reckless policies that undermine national security.

Oversight Chairman James Comer (R-KY) blasted the governors, accusing them of creating safe havens for criminal illegal aliens while ignoring the consequences for American communities. “These policies are dangerous,” Comer said. “They shield violent offenders from deportation, endanger law-abiding citizens, and directly conflict with the rule of law.”

The Trump administration has already taken legal action against sanctuary jurisdictions, launching lawsuits and threatening to withhold federal funds from states and cities that refuse to cooperate with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). The June hearing represents the next phase in that effort: public accountability.

Governor Hochul has attempted to strike a middle ground — claiming to support the deportation of violent criminals while opposing broader enforcement efforts. But critics say her administration routinely blocks ICE from accessing jails and fails to honor detainers. Governor Walz and Governor Pritzker have doubled down on sanctuary policies, defending them as “local autonomy” despite growing concerns about rising crime and cartel activity linked to illegal immigration.

Republicans argue that these state-level policies are a major obstacle to the Trump administration’s immigration crackdown, which prioritizes the removal of dangerous individuals and the dismantling of trafficking networks that exploit the border.

The upcoming hearing will shine a national spotlight on the disconnect between federal immigration law and progressive sanctuary practices. It will also give the American public a chance to see whether Democrat governors are willing to defend their policies when put under oath.

As President Trump doubles down on immigration enforcement in his second term, Republicans are making it clear: if blue-state governors won’t help secure the country, Congress will hold them accountable.
