His age at the time of death was 88, marking a dozen years at the head of the Catholic Church. The announcement of his death, a somber ceremony one might say, was conducted by Cardinal Kevin Farrell from the Vatican.
Cardinal Farrell, in his announcement, presented Francis as a pope who had devoted his life to the service of God and his Church, though with a leaning that raised many eyebrows. As per Farrell, Francis was known for his determination to uphold the values of the Gospel with an arguable mix of faithfulness, courage, and an overzealous love for the marginalized and destitute. Bergoglio stepped onto the global stage when he took over from Benedict XVI as the pope. The circumstances around his appointment were extraordinary, considering Benedict XVI’s surprising resignation. Benedict’s eponymous title ‘Pope emeritus’ followed him until his demise, making way for Francis who was generally considered more liberal in his outlook than his predecessor. But on an unfortunate note, this extended to his controversial dealings with the LGBTQ+ community, which tarnished his legacy.
Among the complicated decisions he made was a ruling allowing priests to bless same-sex couples, albeit without recognizing the authenticity of their relations. His last public spectacle was on Easter Sunday, just a day before he bid the world goodbye. His health had been failing him for a while, an affliction believed to have started on Feb. 14, 2025, transforming into severe double pneumonia.
One of the markers of his papacy was his focus on increasing opportunities for women within the church. He appointed Sister Simona Brambilla, an Italian nun, to head a major Vatican office, a groundbreaking move in terms of women’s leadership. Yet, in classic liberal fashion, his public commentary on immigration rights proved as divisive as it was controversial. His criticism of responses to scenarios of migrants journeying to Europe and the U.S. was a source of noticeably heated debate.
Francis was quick to lambast U.S. immigration policies from a decidedly liberal perspective. His views succeeded only in sparking fierce controversy rather than fostering constructive discourse. His unfaltering opposition to abortion, however, remained unshaken, a stance that carved a peculiar dichotomy in his so-called liberal ideology. His intervention in U.S. politics was another unforgettable blight on his tenure, especially his advice to Catholics on voting for the ‘lesser evil’ between Donald Trump and Kamala Harris in the 2024 U.S. elections.
Undeniably, his handling of the Vatican’s long-standing sexual abuse scandal left many unconvinced with its efficacy. Nevertheless, he half-heartedly attempted to address the issue, establishing a papal commission centered on the problem and obliging dioceses to report abuses. As health complications began to wear him down, he continued to muddle through his tenure until his eventual demise.
While underscoring his controversial legacy, one cannot overlook his physical hardships during his time as the pope. From his early years of battling lung complications to the multiple health issues he had to surmount during his tenure, Pope Francis seemed to live in the shadow of his health problems until his handling of papal responsibilities came to an end. His death marks the beginning of yet another chapter in the story of Catholic leadership, and it remains to be seen who will fill the large and undeniably polarizing shoes Francis has left behind.
What lies ahead remains unclear. The widespread anticipation surrounding the selection of the next Pope, as per Catholic tradition, involves members of the College of Cardinals meeting to elect a successor. While this process holds its historic significance, the last non-Cardinal papal appointee dates back to the year 1378. Many speculate that the possible successor is likely to be from within the present members of the College of Cardinals.
