The radiant bride, Christe Chen, dazzled in her exquisite bridal attire, as she beamed happily at Bradley Robert Dawson, her new husband, during their February 2022 wedding. Their intimate nuptial ceremony was a gathering full of smiles, sentiments, and close-knit family and friends. The couple’s love story was a quick yet intense affair; they first crossed paths in November 2021, and within a time span of merely three months, they were pronouncing their vows. Interestingly, Bradley, who was 38 at the time, had just officially ended his first marriage when he met Christe. There were some family members who were introduced to Bradley for the first time on his wedding day with Christe.
Post their nuptials, the newlyweds shifted into their recently purchased abode in Memphis, Tennessee. As they settled into their new life together, there was enthusiastic anticipation surrounding their elaborate honeymoon later that year. Christe, 36, originally owned a successful bakery shop in Colorado before moving to Memphis for university. She later joined a local supermarket pharmacy after completing her pharmaceutical studies. Bradley, on the other hand, was an IT professional at a non-profit organization focused on supporting children’s welfare.
While their swift courtship raised some eyebrows, those who knew Christe were aware of her longing to get married and start a family. They were all hopeful that Bradley was the soulmate she had been waiting for. Their relationship indeed seemed filled with affection and profound love. In July 2022, they embarked on their long-awaited honeymoon, which had been generously gifted by Christe’s parents.
The lovebirds had chosen Fiji, a paradisiacal gem in the South Pacific, as their honeymoon locale. Bradley had a past connection with Fiji, having married his first wife there in 2019. Christe had also visited the beautiful shores of Fiji previously with her parents. The couple had arranged for a luxurious stay at the upscale Turtle Island resort, sitting beautifully on a private 500-acre island in the Yasawa archipelago.
Their chosen resort, Turtle Island, is a noteworthy location due to its place in popular culture. The idyllic setting was the backdrop for the iconic 1980 movie ‘The Blue Lagoon’, which starred Brooke Shields in a lead role. The same resort was also picked by pop sensation Britney Spears and her ex-husband Kevin Federline for their 2004 honeymoon. This paradisiacal retreat charges $3,500 per night for a secluded stay, hosting a maximum of only 14 couples at a given time in close proximity to the crystal-clear ocean waves and untouched white sand.
The resort, specifically designed for adults, offers exclusivity with personal chefs and butlers available to the guests. Arrival is typically via seaplane, adding to the overall extraordinary experience. Indeed, their selected resort was an epitome of beauty, luxury, and tranquility. It appeared to be the perfect venue to celebrate their newfound wedded bliss.
Two days into their stay, however, resort staff noticed their absence from breakfast and lunch on July 9. A resort worker was dispatched to their villa, referred to as a ‘bure’ in Fijian culture, to understand the reason for their odd absence. There, a most gruesome discovery was made. Christe was found lifeless in the bathroom, contorted in the small space between the wall and the toilet, with a shattered toilet tank lid next to her. Christe was gruesomely covered in blood from her pronounced injuries, which included blunt force trauma to the head and several facial cuts.
Bradley was nowhere to be seen, and it seemed as though he had hastily left. Other guests at the resort informed authorities of noticing the couple arguing after their previous night’s dinner where they had consumed alcohol. Disturbing noises were allegedly heard soon after from their villa. The local police force was notified that Bradley had absconded in a kayak, managing to reach another island located about a mile away.
Upon being apprehended by the officials, it was discovered that Bradley had taken his passport, cash and some personal items with him. This sparked suspicion that he had intended to escape. In the beginning, the authorities believed that the report of Christe’s demise might be a prank in poor taste. Sadly, the gruesome reality was confirmed when they discovered her lifeless body, intensifying their urgency to act.
The sorrow of Christe’s grieving family deepened when they found her body had been inflicted with such extensive damage that it was impossible to embalm it for transportation back to the US. The unbearable situation forced the family to decide on the heartbreaking option of cremation in Fiji. The trail of this distressing case took place in Fiji in December 2024, with Bradley claiming innocence.
During the trial, Bradley argued that he had rowed to the nearby island in the kayak because he wanted to provide his wife with some space after their argument. However, the prosecution team argued otherwise. They posited that he had intentionally packed his personal items with plans to flee, even leaving behind his GPS watch and mobile device to avoid being tracked. His defense team maintained that there was insufficient factual evidence that Bradley committed the crime, instead suggesting that Christe’s tragic death was an accident.
After a week-long trial, Bradley was ultimately found guilty of murder. The presiding judge was persuaded that Bradley was the culprit, and it was unlikely for anyone else to be responsible for Christe’s death. The judge, while pronouncing the verdict, stated, ‘Considering all the evidence collectively, I am convinced that the prosecution has successfully established the murder charge against the defendant beyond any reasonable doubt.’
In February, the Fijian justice system condemned Bradley to life imprisonment, with a clause that he must spend at least 18 years incarcerated before potentially receiving parole. The judge, during the pronouncement of the sentence, harshly criticized Bradley’s actions, stating, ‘Your post-incident behavior was despicable.’ The judge further admonished him by elaborating, ‘After causing grave and fatal injuries to the deceased, you attempted to escape, leaving the helpless victim alone in your bure.’
