A resident of Frederick, Maryland, has recently entered a plea of guilt for charges related to the severe verbal and physical abuse of a gate personnel at the Dulles International Airport, an incident which took place in March of this year. The individual in question, one Christopher Crittenden, age 54, publicly admitted his guilt on Friday. The official charge on the records reads ‘interference with security screening personnel’ and is recognized as a violent offense under federal law. This information was shared to the public through an official statement from the United States Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Virginia.
The incendiary series of events that unfolded on March 13 saw Crittenden preparing to board a United Airlines flight to Atlanta. However, when unforeseen technical issues resulted in a delay for the flight, Crittenden became quite volatile, as stated in the official report. This agitation led him to engage in intense verbal sparring with a gate agent who was merely trying to maintain the peace.
Crittenden raised his voice in anger towards the gate agent, causing public disturbance. Documents from the court hearing reveal that the gate agent made an attempt to defuse the situation by asking Crittenden to lower his tone and ‘avoid using offensive language before stepping aside.’ The appeal, however, seems to have been ineffective.
In a fit of anger, Crittenden proceeded to rip his boarding pass and stormed away from the scene, only to reappear later. He then approached the gate agent, demanding a replacement for the destroyed boarding pass, according to the court proceedings.
At this stage, the situation escalated to the point where the flight captain got involved. Stepping into the fray, the captain communicated to Crittenden that he was not going to be allowed to board the flight. This decision was due to the fact that Crittenden was perceived to be under the influence of alcohol, coupled with his persistent and abusive behavior towards the staff.
Upon hearing these words, Crittenden made his way towards the gate agent in an aggressive manner. The irate passenger ultimately delivered a punch squarely to the gate agent’s mouth using a closed fist. The powerful blow is documented in court records, painting a vivid picture of the chaos that unfolded at the gate.
The force of the punch was intense enough to knock the gate agent down. The poor man experienced a brief loss of consciousness as a result of the sudden and violent incident, according to statements from court documents. Meanwhile, Crittenden stood over his victim, seemingly unfazed by the chaos he had just caused.
In the face of this violent outburst, other passengers on board the waiting aircraft took it upon themselves to intervene. They proceeded to hold Crittenden in place, restraining him from causing further harm or disturbance while waiting for the authorities to arrive.
Officers of the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority were eventually successful in apprehending and taking Crittenden into custody. This action marked the end of a tense sequence of events that unfolded at Dulles International Airport, leading to the arrest and charging of Christopher Crittenden.
Following this incident, when queried about Crittenden’s future with the airline, United Airlines offered no specific comment regarding potential punitive measures, namely a possible ban on his usage of their services.
Christopher Crittenden is set to appear once again in court for his sentencing process, which is scheduled to take place on October 9th. As confirmed by legal notice, he could face up to a decade in prison, which is reflective of the serious nature of his crime.
