Secretary of State Marco Rubio pulled no punches Tuesday night during an interview with Fox News host Sean Hannity, warning that Venezuela and mass migration now pose twin threats to U.S. security and sovereignty — and that the Trump administration won’t be fooled by false promises or globalist narratives.
Rubio zeroed in on the regime of Venezuelan dictator Nicolás Maduro, calling it a collapsing socialist state that is not just exporting migrants, but also enabling foreign adversaries to plant roots in the Western Hemisphere. “They’re not going to sucker Donald Trump,” Rubio said. “But they suckered Joe Biden.”
He laid out the scale of the Venezuelan exodus: over eight million have fled the country, overwhelming Colombia and other neighbors, and now surging toward the United States. But Rubio warned the humanitarian crisis was only half the story.
Terrorist Networks Anchored in Venezuela
According to Rubio, the far more dangerous aspect is the presence of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and Hezbollah in Venezuela. “These aren’t just rogue nations dealing drugs,” he told Hannity. “They’re anchor points for terrorist networks operating in the Americas.”
Rubio said Iran has found a launching pad for influence and operations inside the hemisphere — and that Venezuela, under Maduro, has welcomed them in.
No Way to Vet What Doesn’t Exist
On immigration, Rubio took aim at the unrealistic promises of mass migrant vetting. He explained that in lawless or failed states, like Venezuela or Afghanistan, records simply don’t exist — and even the most thorough vetting process can’t account for what can’t be verified.
“You can only vet information that exists,” Rubio emphasized. “And the information just isn’t there. In many cases, there’s no criminal record because the person has never been caught, or there’s no functioning government to keep one.”
He warned that even migrants who don’t arrive radicalized can be pushed that way later, especially when isolated, unable to assimilate, and targeted by propaganda networks. Rubio cited last week’s shocking attack in Washington, D.C., where an Afghan migrant who entered during Biden’s airlift shot two National Guard members, killing one. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem later revealed that he had been radicalized via overseas connections after arriving in the U.S.
Rubio Slams Biden’s Deal with Maduro
Rubio also revealed what he called an underreported failure of the Biden administration: a deal cut with Maduro that the regime immediately violated.
“Here was the deal,” Rubio said. “Maduro demanded the return of his drug-trafficking nephews and his chief money launderer in exchange for promising free and fair elections. Biden gave them what they wanted. The criminals were returned. The elections never happened.”
Rubio said the administration gave away critical leverage, got nothing in return, and empowered a narco-dictator who continues to destabilize Latin America while undermining U.S. national security.
“The bottom line is there is no effective way to allow hundreds of thousands of people to enter any country in the world and not face consequences,” Rubio said.
With President Trump now ramping up strikes on narco-terrorist networks and cutting off asylum channels for hostile regimes, Rubio made clear: the Trump administration is done playing defense — and Venezuela is officially on notice.
