Memphis Family’s Pursuit of Justice: Accused Murderers to Stand Trial

A Memphis-based family continues in their pursuit of justice, as individuals accused of a horrendous crime are set to have their day in court this Tuesday. The alleged criminals, siblings, make up only two of the four individuals implicated in the murder of Jasmine and Michael Ellington. This tragic event took place on Cleoford Avenue in the area of Frayser towards the end of April.

This night of horror also resulted in harm to the mother of the Ellington children, with her suffering gunshot wounds. She recounts this traumatic evening publicly for the first time. The brothers facing charges for this ghastly incident are slated to be present at the preliminary hearings on Tuesday.

The brothers, Martavious and LaCameron Jenkins, are the ones being summoned to court. Yet, for the matriarch of the Ellington family, digesting the loss of her older children is painfully challenging. The wounds she received on that dreadful night serve as a constant reminder of the brutal crime when her offspring were taken away.

The grief is especially profound when she recalls her eldest son’s demise. The family has sought out therapy to cope with their loss while also turning to religious faith in these trying times. Yet, nothing seems to be able to fully wipe away the deep-rooted memories of that heart-wrenching night in April, punctuated by a horrifying barrage of bullets.

The mother admits to being present on that fateful night as she was the one who alerted the authorities about a domestic disturbance. However, her daughter’s refusal to communicate the situation to the officers resulted in the quick exit of law enforcement. This withdrawal provided an opportunity for Lorenzo Cross and three other men to return.

These individuals all bear arms as they disembarked from their mode of transport. Information regarding Lorenzo Cross and the reported domestic violence in her daughter’s life came to her notice through a mutual acquaintance. The mother’s only recourse at this point was to pray with all her heart for her children’s safety.

She recounts, with deep love and affection, that both of her children, Jasmine and Michael Ellington, were exemplar in their conduct. She often referred to Michael as a ‘gentile giant’ due to his immense love for his siblings, parents, and an intrinsic desire to help others. Jasmine, on the other hand, was renowned for her delicate and kind demeanor, often stepping forward to assist those in need of a helping hand.

Presently, a total of four men face charges in connection with the Ellington children’s shooting. Latavius and La’Cameron Jenkins’ case moves forward with their preliminary hearing scheduled. Meanwhile, Malik Merriweather and Lorenzo Cross are still at large, eluding the justice system.
