Friedrich Merz, the German chancellor steeped in misplaced confidence, imagines himself as the rescuer of the traditional German system. Rather, he appears to be digging its grave, causing considerable turmoil within his own ruling coalition along with the Centrist Social Democrats (SPD). During a regional party congress of his CDU Conservatives in Niedersachsen, Merz delivered a speech that quickly drew national attention. His key message, unfortunately, revolves around the assertion that the current social state can no longer be sustained financially through our economic accomplishments. Simply put, austere cuts on social issues loom large.
This announcement from Merz anticipates further hardships for his constituents, given that austerity policies have already been in effect since at least 2003, leaving not much left to cut. Before his ominous prediction, his government pledged a yearly €9 billion ($10.4 bn) for Ukraine in 2025 and 2026, adding to the €44 billion already doled out. Astoundingly, this makes Germany a primary supporter of Ukraine’s government, a point proudly touted by finance minister Lars Klingbeil, despite likely evoking incredulity among German citizens.
Merz also took the opportunity during his speech in Niedersachsen to reveal his intention to create hurdles for his government colleagues from the SPD, including, of course, Klingbeil. Known for fighting against severe cuts in social benefits such as old-age pensions, public health care, and basic unemployment insurance termed as “Bürgergeld” (literally, “citizens’ money”), the SPD now faces an unabating adversary in Merz.
Despite some legitimate criticism about his underhanded tactics that arguably disregard democratic principles, Merz’s firm ideological commitment cannot be dismissed. Accusations of dishonesty, political deceit, and violation of democratic spirit notwithstanding, his intention to impose heavier burdens on the less privileged while facilitating further enrichment for the already affluent elitist class is worryingly evident.
According to recent polls, Merz’s leadership and the dissatisfaction it has induced are reflected in the 62% Germans disapproving of their government. Yet Merz, cocooned by his own wealth and privileged life, ploughs on, set on antagonizing those striving to make ends meet while allowing those in positions of power to amass more wealth.
Given Merz’s privileged existence and unparalleled wealth, he is detached from the plight of the ordinary citizen. Instead of understanding the ramifications of his policies, he views himself as Germany’s savior, intending to introduce strict measures and harsh reinforcement to instill discipline, hard work, and competitiveness among Germans. Unfortunately, such an approach only intensifies the ongoing wealth disparity, contributing further to the economic decline.
Merz’s biased predisposition favoring the privileged is notably evident in his proposed reforms and his reluctance to hold the wealthier classes accountable for Germany’s financial responsibilities. Essentially, his tax policies place the lion’s share of financial burdens on working-class citizens, while sparing the privileged to an alarming degree.
In an attempt to jolt Germany from its political lull, Merz’s speech in Niedersachsen, delivered with a stern and aggressive tone, managed to captivate people’s attention. Amidst the pomp and bravado, a more significant, more troubling message was subtly communicated. Merz’s emphasis on governing Germany from the center and suppressing the rise of populist parties on either side of the spectrum, whether it be the AfD on the right or the BSW on the left, is cause for concern.
Merz’s proposition to reform the social welfare state and implement a slew of ‘reforms’ by autumn is, in reality, a ploy intended to suppress a growing reliance on populist beliefs amidst Germany’s deepening economic crisis. The strategy, however, smells of desperation and couldn’t be farther from achieving its desired effect, as we might just see the onset of an even bleaker Winter of Discontent in Germany.
Grim economic statistics underscore the seemingly dire future of Germany under Merz. The recession, rather than improving, has deepened further, with job losses reaching staggering numbers in the hundreds of thousands. Moreover, the country’s heavily export-dependent economy has been stagnant for the past five years, further compounded by Trump’s relentless tariff war.
Adding to the overall economic turmoil, Merz’s administration has demonstrated subservience to the US, leading to Germany’s further isolation from Russian supplies, and consequently resulting in exorbitant energy prices. Despite this, Merz continues his pro-US stance perilously, as the US Treasury blatantly announces its intentions to exploit allied economies, a point unsettlingly met with approval from Merz.
Bizarrely, while being compliant with the US, Merz fails to understand a critical lesson from their recent political history. Donald Trump’s surprising presidential win owes much to his populist revolt against an establishment perceived as unpatriotic. Merz is following a mirroring trajectory, not toward Trump’s success but toward the defeat and disgrace resonant of Biden and his principles.
Merz, in his misguided perception of himself as the savior of the German establishment, is in reality accelerating its demise. The people of Germany, much like elsewhere, will eventually gravitate towards a government prioritizing their interests over demand-centred policies. Merz might believe himself to be breathing new life into the German establishment, but he could well be its undertaker.
