Miami’s Prolific Criminal Anthwan Ragan Convicted for First-Degree Murder

A man, known for his involvement in a series of crimes in North Miami over the span of a month, is transitioning into the sentencing stage following his implication in the shooting deaths of two individuals. Recently, Anthwan Ragan was handed a guilty verdict on charges of first-degree murder, stemming from visuals captured via surveillance equipment that caught him in the act of attacking and subsequently shooting 21-year-old Luis Perez in the stairway of a Motel 7 in 2013.

Interestingly, Ragan was recorded on camera flashing a smile upon hearing his conviction verdict. He made a court appearance this Tuesday, where the same group of jurors who had earlier concluded that he was guilty are set to decide on his sentencing. As stated by Miami-Dade Circuit Court Judge Marisa Tinkler Mendez, Ragan’s punitive options are limited to life incarceration with no prospect of parole or capital punishment.

The floor was opened to multiple witnesses to give their testimonies – among them were Ragan’s father and uncle, seen in court dressed in familiar orange prisoner outfits. Anthwan Ragan Sr., Anthwan’s father, verified continuing his relation with his son right up to the point of his arrest.

An additional testimony came from a woman claiming to have been another of Ragan’s victims. She recounted an incident from 2013, where Ragan robbed the Royal Castle restaurant she was employed at. During the robbery, she remembers Ragan brandishing a firearm at her while issuing a threat to her life.

It is important to note that the demise of Perez fits into a broader pattern of criminal activity undertaken by Ragan over a thirty-day period. In another pending case, Ragan finds himself facing charges related to the fatal discharging of a firearm that resulted in the death of 10-year-old Aaron Vu and injured Vu’s father. These actions occurred in a North Miami salon hardly a fortnight subsequent to the Perez killing in 2013.

A surveillance system installed in the nail salon managed to capture the shocking moment when shots were fired. As per the narrative outlined by law enforcement, two individuals, one of them identified as Ragan, entered the salon, Hong Kong Nails. Armed and determined, they demanded cash from the sales register and the customers present within the facility.

After robbing the salon, the two assailants discharged their weapons towards the service area, making their escape from the scene thereafter. The innocent young inhabitant, Aaron, unfortunately, came in the line of fire and did not survive the incident. Ham Nam Vu, the owner of the salon and the father of the young victim, endured the attack and was a witness on the stand at the earlier court proceedings the previous month.

With Tuesday’s court proceedings brought to a close, the jury room is expected to see the jurors converge to debate and come up with a potential sentence decision. Expectations lie upon the announcement of the said decision, which could occur as early as the next Wednesday.
