U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Mike Waltz is spearheading a bold effort to overhaul the UN from within, saying President Donald Trump has given him a clear mission: refocus the institution on peacekeeping and walk away from the “nonsense.”
In a sit-down interview with Daily Wire editor-in-chief Brent Scher, Waltz outlined how his role fits within Trump’s America First foreign policy — not to abandon the UN, but to reforge it into a platform that serves U.S. interests and restores its founding purpose.
Reclaiming the UN’s Core Mission
“You’re supposed to be stopping wars, ending wars, preventing wars,” Waltz said, referring to the UN’s original intent following World War II. “And yet here we are 80 years later and we have more conflicts around the globe than ever.”
Instead of walking away entirely, as some critics have called for, Waltz is pushing targeted reforms — including defunding agencies that have drifted from core peacekeeping functions. He points to efforts like the Haiti stabilization mission, which now includes forces from countries like Kenya, as an example of burden-sharing done right.
“We’ve just got to get it back focused on those peacekeeping and peace enforcement missions that they did so well in the past,” he added.
Defunding the Bureaucracy and Woke Agendas
Waltz didn’t mince words about the parts of the UN he wants dismantled.
“We walked away from WHO, the World Health Organization. UNRWA, the UN agency in Gaza that’s been completely infiltrated by Hamas — we defunded that too,” Waltz said. He also criticized the Human Rights Council for giving a platform to rogue regimes like North Korea and Iran.
The ambassador argued that the UN is overrun with agencies duplicating efforts on fringe priorities. “At most you need one [climate agency], if not none,” Waltz said. “But you definitely don’t need seven.”
Instead, Waltz said the U.S. would prioritize agencies that impact global logistics and commerce — like telecommunications, maritime safety, and civil aviation — areas where he insists U.S. leadership must dominate. “We want them aligned with our standards, not China or Russia’s.”
Making Diplomacy Work for America
While he’s critical of much of the UN’s agenda, Waltz said it’s still vital to maintain a single forum for global diplomacy — especially one that is based in New York, not Beijing or Moscow.
“We should have one place in the world where everybody can talk,” he said. “I want that American-led and in the United States.”
Trump’s strategy appears to be working. Waltz says the UN has already agreed to eliminate over 2,600 bureaucratic roles, slash its total budget by 15%, and reduce the number of deployed peacekeepers by 25%.
Cracking Down on Christian Persecution
Another major piece of Waltz’s UN overhaul is addressing religious persecution, especially against Christians — a cause both Trump and Waltz have elevated since taking office.
Waltz cited data from NGOs that say 80% of global Christian persecution takes place in Nigeria. He even credited rapper Nicki Minaj for joining the effort at the UN last month, where she amplified the call to protect persecuted Christians.
“It’s an unlikely pairing,” Waltz admitted. “But someone like her, with a quarter billion followers — she can spotlight what’s happening and drive action.”
Fighting Back Against Global Adversaries
Representing the U.S. at the UN has come with its share of challenges. Waltz recalled a recent incident when the Cuban ambassador interrupted his speech, accusing him of lying.
“There are times where I think the tribes in the Middle East and Afghanistan are easier than here,” said Waltz, a former Green Beret. “This is the world stage right here in New York.”
Still, Waltz insists the fight is worth it.
“We’re cutting. We’re DOGE-ing. We’re getting them back to basics in line with the president’s vision,” he said, channeling Trump’s brand of blunt reform. “Stop with the focus on climate, stop with the focus on gender, and all of these other social issues. Let’s get back to peace.”
