Musk’s Political Gamble: A Costly Misstep?

The power of complaint-oriented politics is limited. In a seemingly parallel existence put forth by X’s notorious “For You” algorithm, I encountered a recent post by Elon Musk, published just a few hours before. ‘Never before have humans orbited around Earth’s poles!’ read his post – featuring a video shared by SpaceX. This footage, captured by the company’s Dragon spacecraft during a private journey, showcased a raw expanse of icy landscapes. The portrayal was undeniably mesmerizing. However, Musk’s decision to share this at such a moment was slightly dejecting.

X delivered this intriguing piece of content right around the time it was announced that Susan Crawford, the Democratic judge whom Musk had vehemently campaigned against with a whopping $25 million, had won a decisive victory for a seat on the Wisconsin Supreme Court. With Musk posing a notably influential presence during the election—ranging from personally campaigning in the state to openly pledging to remunerate voters with $100 for bolstering his America PAC against ‘activist judges’—the election could be considered as something of a vote on Musk’s popularity. And in this regard, the verdict was a resounding negative.

Musk, typically a frantic contributor, was fairly reserved in his political commentary that night, sharing only a select few, curt messages with his 218.5 million followers. ‘The left’s lengthy deception is the corruptive manipulation of the judiciary,’ he shared in a cryptic midnight post.

Against this loss, the SpaceX post seems to portray an alternative reality that Musk could have lived in—one where the world’s wealthiest individual wasn’t prey to the divisive nature of his own platform’s algorithms. But whether this path was inevitable given Musk’s character and individual ideologies is still up in the air. It’s also plausible to visualize a different Musk—one that focuses more on his ventures and concentrating on maintaining the carefully fostered image of Elon Musk, the Supreme Leader of the Geek Geniuses.

Regrettably, he fully succumbed to the seductive power of resentment-driven politics. As with many other excessive social media users, he morphed into the version that his fervent followers craved, apparently committing what seems to be reputation harakiri. After taking up the ceremonial figurehead title in the DOGE administration—supervising the near-legal dismantlement of the federal government—Musk’s standing has become not just divisive, but also generally disapproved of in America.

Today, his political sway seems to be on the decline, Tesla is under large-scale public scrutiny, and sales of his automobiles appear to be diving. This morning, hours post the defeat of his supported candidate, it was reported by insider sources and Cabinet members that Musk would be ‘dismantling’ his administrative role for a gentler ‘supporting function.’ It appears Musk has overstayed his welcome.

Musk’s allure has always been rooted in two elements: wealth and image. As the wealthiest man alive, Musk serves as both a fundraising powerhouse and an authoritative figure. His reputation is equally crucial, gaining respect from those who value wealth immensely. His renowned status in Silicon Valley was a boon to the campaign, attracting new, enthusiastic voters and conveying the message that the administration, under Musk, would recreate the government to function like a sleek, contemporary startup.

Despite his wealth remaining formidable, the Wisconsin election indicates that Musk himself might be more of a liability in electoral scenarios. A survey released today by Marquette University Law School in Wisconsin uncovered that 60% of respondents have a negative perception of Musk. His national approval appears to have slumped by 10 points between February to March, according to a recent poll. The general public’s endorsement of his efforts is also in significant decline, as evidenced by an assortment of national polls.

His posts with captions such as ‘Easy money in Wisconsin,’ which implicitly lure residents with incentives to pose outside polling sites, not only raise legal eyebrows but also hammered home the idea that the world’s most affluent man was actively trying to secure an election win with monetary bait.

One could argue that getting close to politics will eventually serve to fortify his already massive empire. However, an abundance of indicators hint towards a less satisfying outcome. Supporting such high risk political ventures has always been a game of peril, but his decision to join the administration and, at one point, stylize himself as a parallel president was arguably the highest stake bet he’s ever made.

At present, it does not seem to be proving fruitful. As Musk woke this morning, it was to a diminished popularity unlike anything he’s experienced lately. He’s distanced himself from a large portion of the American audience that once held him in high regard, and his political clout is dwindling quickly.

Now, the burning question is; having gotten a generous taste of the political limelight, can he relinquish it without a struggle?
