Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is reportedly positioning herself as one of California Governor Gavin Newsom’s most enthusiastic backers as he weighs a potential 2028 presidential bid.
According to a report from Axios, Pelosi believes Newsom would make a “great president” and has privately expressed strong confidence in his political future. One former Pelosi aide described her as a “Gavin fan girl,” adding that she rarely misreads political talent. “She’s hardly ever wrong. When she says she sees something, it’s a real thing,” the aide said.
Pelosi, 85, is currently serving what is expected to be her final term in Congress after nearly four decades on Capitol Hill. With her time in House leadership now behind her, she would have more freedom than in previous election cycles to publicly and privately back a preferred presidential candidate ahead of the Democratic primaries.
The longtime San Francisco lawmaker has not hidden her admiration for Newsom in the past. “I’ve seen him grow politically. I’ve also seen him have this beautiful family, and for all of us who love him, seeing him evolve has been wonderful to behold,” Pelosi previously told Vogue.
Newsom has steadily expanded his national and international profile in recent years, fueling speculation about a White House run. He has spoken at the World Economic Forum in Davos, attended the Munich Security Conference, and is releasing a memoir later this month — moves often associated with national ambitions.
Pelosi and Newsom also share personal ties beyond politics. Both hail from San Francisco, and Pelosi’s brother-in-law was once briefly married to Newsom’s aunt.
As Democrats look ahead to 2028, Pelosi’s backing could carry weight within party donor circles and among establishment figures. Whether Newsom formally launches a campaign remains to be seen, but if he does, one of the party’s most powerful political operators appears ready to be in his corner.
