A forthcoming book by Wall Street Journal reporter Josh Dawsey paints a damning picture of Hunter Biden’s influence and interference during his father’s failed 2024 reelection campaign—describing the president’s son as a significant burden and “an albatross” around Joe Biden’s neck.
Appearing on ABC’s This Week, Dawsey outlined how Hunter’s legal troubles and oversized presence inside the campaign weighed heavily on the president during critical moments in the race against Donald Trump.
“Hunter Biden was a major figure in the president’s inner circle,” Dawsey explained. “He was involved in campaign decisions, participated in calls, and constantly occupied the president’s attention—even during key points of the race.”
Anchor George Stephanopoulos asked Dawsey to clarify his description of Hunter as a “burden” on the campaign. Dawsey responded by recounting how, in June 2024—just weeks before Biden’s disastrous debate performance—the president was preoccupied not with campaign strategy or foreign policy, but with his son’s criminal trial.
“Joe Biden had a packed month,” Dawsey said. “European travel, the first debate with Donald Trump—but what he was most concerned about, according to those close to him, was that his son wouldn’t be convicted. He even offered to testify on Hunter’s behalf.”
Dawsey added that Biden privately expressed frustration over the case, reportedly telling friends that prosecutors were trying to “break” his son. In the end, Biden made the unprecedented decision to pardon Hunter, an act that further fueled public outrage and accusations of political corruption.
What shocked Dawsey most during his reporting, however, was the extent of Hunter’s influence behind the scenes. “He wasn’t just a distraction—he was inside the operation,” Dawsey said. “Helping shape decisions, weighing in on messaging. It was a major point of concern for several on the campaign.”

The book adds fuel to the ongoing controversy surrounding the Biden family, confirming what many Americans suspected: that Hunter Biden was not just a scandal waiting to explode, but an active force undermining his father’s campaign from within.
