New U.S. Rep. Mike Haridopolos Focused on Border Security and Economic Challenges

The freshly inaugurated U.S. Representative, Mike Haridopolos, a Republican from Indian Harbour Beach, revealed his key objectives in a digital meeting this week. Those included safeguarding our frontiers, preserving our dominance in space, and rectifying the economic issues that plague the country.

Residing by the Indian River in Florida, Haridopolos, who assumed the role after Bill Posey’s retirement, affirmed his commitment to protecting the health of this essential estuary. ‘The welfare of the Indian River Lagoon is of utmost importance to all of us. As a resident on the river, the improvements made so far are clear to me, but there’s much more work to do,’ he remarked.

Taking his dedication to the estuary further, Haridopolos declared, ‘I am prepared to be a devoted component of the Congressional Estuary Caucus. These issues are non-partisan, and we can join forces to enhance the river system.’

Haridopolos is harsh on criminal activity and resolute about the security of our borders. His longstanding relation with me dates back to his days as a history professor at Brevard Community College (now known as Eastern Florida State College), and later as a state representative and President of the Florida Senate. His straightforward approach to politics has always been commendable.

Although he is strict when dealing with crime, he has a strong belief in the justice system. Haridopolos actively advocated for bills seeking reparations for tragically wrongfully convicted men from Brevard County, Wilton Dedge and William Dillon. Both men suffered over two decades in prison, while other Republican legislators preferred to sidestep the issue.

He shared his thoughts saying, ‘I can’t fathom spending even a single night incarcerated, let alone enduring a period exceeding 20 years, as these two individuals did for offenses they didn’t commit.’ ‘My hard stance on crime stems from my faith in our fair and just system. However, when the government errs, they must acknowledge and rectify these mistakes.’

Further explaining his viewpoint, Haridopolos said, ‘Our state has profited from our tough-on-crime approach, but when we falter, we must compensate these individuals for the terrifying time they have to serve for a crime they didn’t perpetrate. That’s what justice is all about.’

In reference to the national border crisis, Haridopolos opined, ‘It is apparent to both Republicans and Democrats that unless our borders are secured, the associated issues will continue to plague us. It’s not just about the obvious costs of people crossing illegally, but also about graver concerns such as the violent acts that have occurred throughout our country.’

He emphasized regulating legal immigration and brought attention to the deadly repercussions of the fentanyl problem that has been under scrutiny for several years. His endeavor, along with his wife, Dr. Stephanie Haridopolos, proved to be invaluable in compelling Florida to regulate doctors and pharmacies involved with pill mills during the height of the opioid epidemic.

Now, his focus has shifted towards the fentanyl crisis. ‘Presently, China is manufacturing the fentanyl that drug cartels are permitting to penetrate into the United States, leading to tens of thousands of American deaths each year,’ Haridopolos stated. ‘Therefore, I commend President Trump’s intense crackdown on both border security and the violent criminals causing grave disorder in our society.’

Haridopolos also listed reducing energy and grocery costs as primary goals. He mentioned that after border security, his next priority was addressing the escalating grocery prices and believed that lowering energy costs would indirectly reduce the amount individuals spend on groceries.

Expanding on his strategy, Haridopolos explained, ‘We plan to achieve this through two measures. First, by bolstering energy production to lower gas prices, and secondly, by curbing government expenditure, a trigger for inflation that economic experts agree on.’

Discussing planetary exploration, Haridopolos underscored the importance for the U.S. to maintain its shrinking lead over China in the space race. He vowed to keep transparent communication channels open, including potential monthly video chats.

In closing, Haridopolos said, ‘You guys have always been impartial in your treatment of me and I will always be responsive to any queries presented because the public has the right to be informed.’

Haridopolos ended with, ‘The responsibility that comes with being an elected official includes ensuring justice is served. I appreciate the aggressiveness with which you approach issues of great significance in our growing community.’
