Nighttime Vandalism Inflicts $20K Damages on North Shore Golf Club

In the early morning hours of Sunday, August 3, 2025, the North Shore Golf Club suffered a destructive incident. Located in Vienna, New York, the golf course, which has stood for a century, fell victim to a mysterious ATV driver who left behind a trail of damages worth around $20,000.

Robert Caione, who co-owns North Shore Golf Club, awoke to a shocking sight that Sunday morning. The greens of two out of the nine holes on the course were marred by obtrusive tire tracks. The severity of the damage was considerable, with parts of the green grounds being significantly disrupted.

The tracks had not merely scraped the surface; they had been deeply etched into the terrain. Caione, observing the devastated condition of the holes, expressed his frustration and disbelief at the sheer extent of the carnage.

Evidence of the calamitous event was not limited to the golf course itself. Security footage from a nearby residential property displayed an individual recklessly spinning donuts with an ATV under the cover of darkness. The timing of the recording strongly suggests that this was the perpetrator that desecrated the golf course.

Caione is convinced that the individual caught on the residential security footage was indeed the vandal responsible for the dilapidation of his golf course. The repeated swirling patterns left by the ATV on his property and seen in the video mirrored each other.

Further reinforcing Caione’s beliefs, another video footage captured a similar vehicle on the golf course. Collectively, the clues pointed towards a high-speed, disruptive drive across the green fields of the golf course.

Accounting for the extent of the damage, repairs are estimated to cost somewhere near $20,000. Caione, who already shoulders an annual burden of approximately $15,000 in upkeep for the lush greens, termed the damages ‘a significant blow’.

In the immediate aftermath, strenuous efforts were undertaken to remediate the damages. Caione and his team labored the entirety of Sunday, striving to restore the desecrated greens. However, the cleanup operations did not conclude there; they expended another exhaustive day under a sweltering sun to return the golf course to some semblance of its former glory.

Nonetheless, full restoration remains a distant goal for the North Shore Golf Club. Forecasting the time needed for complete recovery, Caione stated that the course might not return to its flawless state until the close of next year. This prediction suggests a long and arduous road to full recovery ahead.

The remnants of the intrusive tire tracks, he further noted, would persist on the green surface for an extended period. The substantial damage caused by the vandals would be visible much after the restorative efforts, possibly for up to two years.

Caione, however, refused to let the damages deter the club from meeting its commitments. Despite the dire condition of the green, he expressed an unwavering resolve to continue hosting tournaments that had been previously planned.

Reiterating his attachment to the North Shore Golf Club, Caione referred to it as their ‘crown jewel’. He proudly pointed out the exceptional beauty of their greens. Even in these challenging times, he emphasized the commitment dedicated to maintaining that beauty.

In an effort to bring the offenders to justice, the co-owners of the North Shore Golf Club have announced a cash reward of $2,000. This reward awaits anyone who can provide leads that directly result in the arrest and conviction of the destructive vandals.

The local authority, specifically the Oneida County Sheriff’s Office, has also called for public cooperation in this regard. They invite anyone with valuable information to dial 315-765-2725 and share their potentially vital knowledge about the case.

As investigations continue and recovery efforts press on, the North Shore Golf Club remains a symbol of resilience, showcasing its determination to overcome adversity and restore its beloved greens to their former glory.
