American shoppers pulled back on their spending last month for the first time since August as stubborn inflation continued to bite and harsh weather curbed economic activity.
Retail sales plunged 0.9% in January from the prior month, the Commerce Department said Friday. That’s down sharply from December’s upwardly revised 0.7% gain and well below economists’ expectations of a 0.4% decline. The figures are adjusted for seasonal swings but not inflation.
Shoppers reined in their spending across multiple categories last month. Specialty stores and auto dealers were hit hardest, with spending falling 4.6% and 3%, respectively.
Inflation could worsen if President Donald Trump keeps his promise of imposing 25% tariffs on Mexico and Canada as soon as March 1. The Trump administration is also weighing levying reciprocal tariffs in April. Most economists say Trump’s hefty duties would likely ramp up price pressures in the US, contrary to the Trump administration’s belief that foreign countries will pay for the tariffs

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis endorsed the idea of abolishing property taxes throughout the Sunshine State, but explained that it would require a constitutional amendment.
The governor, who is currently serving his second term after a decisive re-election victory in Florida’s 2022 gubernatorial contest, was responding to someone on X who advocated abolishing property taxes in the state and asked what would need to be done to make that happen.
“Property taxes are local, not state. So we’d need to do a constitutional amendment (requires 60% of voters to approve) to eliminate them (which I would support) or even to reform/lower them,” DeSantis noted.
“We should put the boldest amendment on the ballot that has a chance of getting that 60%,” he continued.
“I agree that taxing land/property is the more oppressive and ineffective form of taxation,” the governor added.

A top official in the Biden administration’s Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) directed millions in migrant assistance grants to nonprofits where she previously held senior positions, a watchdog report revealed Thursday.
Robin Dunn Marcos, who led HHS’s Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR) under former President Joe Biden, oversaw $22.6 billion in grant distributions since 2020, with her former employers emerging as top beneficiaries. The International Rescue Committee (IRC), where she spent 23 years as a senior director, received $598 million, while Church World Service, her employer of four years, was awarded $355 million, according to an OpenTheBooks report.
Through a network of nonprofit organizations, ORR provided an extensive array of benefits to migrants, including dollar-for-dollar matching savings plans for vehicle and home purchases, small business loans up to $15,000 and credit repair loans up to $1,500. Additional services included “cultural orientation,” emergency housing support, legal assistance and Medicaid care. The OpenTheBooks report called the programs a “giant magnet for those seeking to cross the border and claim asylum.”

US Aircraft Carrier Damaged After Colliding With Huge Merchant Ship Off Egypt
In a highly unusual and embarrassing incident, a US Navy aircraft carrier has collided with a merchant ship off the coast of Egypt in the Mediterranean Sea, a US Sixth Fleet spokesman revealed Thursday.
The collision involved the Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS Harry S. Truman and the merchant vessel Besiktas-M at around noon local time on Wednesday.
The vessels collided near Port Said, but there were no injuries reported on either ship. No injuries or flooding on the aircraft carrier were reported, and its propulsion plants “are unaffected and in a safe and stable condition,” the Navy’s 6th Fleet said.
