New York City Police Department’s Commissioner, Jessica Tisch, maintained an assertive stance on Monday, rejecting the notion of the National Guard being deployed for law enforcement duties in New York City. Tisch voiced her vigorous disapproval, stating, ‘National Guard, as esteemed as they are, their training does not encompass managing urban crime.’ The Commissioner expressed her views at a Midtown breakfast event organized by the Citizens Budget Commission.
She further stated, ‘While their expertise extends to various areas, dealing with city-level crime is not their forte.’ This followed the Trump administration’s decision to assign the National Guard to Chicago, potentially extending this policy to other cities as well.
Enumerating her apprehensions, she said, ‘My grave concern about the concept of Stationing the National Guard in New York City or other major cities is that it could lead to a surge of confusion, chaos, and disorder, which would only undermine our efforts. Moreover, as a lifelong New Yorker, the idea of militarizing our streets is truly abhorrent to me.’
Mayor Adams also expressed disapproval regarding the deployment of the National Guard in the city to combat crime. He stated last month that control of the city’s law enforcement infrastructure should not be handed over to outside forces. His sentiments echo Tisch’s stand that the city can handle its law enforcement.
Tisch, who had a recent meeting with U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi, asserted firmly on Monday her stand on the topic. ‘I want to make it clear to anyone who wants to debate this issue that we, the NYPD, are capable of handling this. We neither require nor desire federal intervention in this context.’
She highlighted the progressive decline in homicides, shootings, and other forms of crime in New York City, asserting the unmatched competence of NYPD officers. ‘Our officers are the best at what they do, and this is definitely not a time to shake things up,’ she iterated.
Nonetheless, Tisch did indicate a certain area where she felt the Federal Government could lend a hand. If there is a genuine desire from the White House to assist the city, she suggested, it should be through intensified efforts to regulate the influx of firearms through the ‘Iron Pipeline’. It’s a kind of an illicit gun trafficking route stretching from the Southern states to the city.
In her concluding remarks, Tisch asserted, ‘If we were to have more federal prosecutors, we could certainly take on more gun-related cases. Our focus should align towards building a relevant partnership with the federal government, aimed at the right objectives.’
