Oneonta ranks among the ten safest cities in New York as of 2025, according to a compilation by SafeWise, a firm specializing in safety and home security studies. The rankings leveraged data from the annual safety enumeration to determine the positions based on the rate of violent crimes and property-related crimes. Notwithstanding the label ‘safest cities,’ the list also features several towns with populations exceeding 15,000.
Derived from the current year’s State of Safety Report, the results suggest a dwindling concern among residents regarding their overall safety and security compared to the preceding year. The survey establishes that roughly 47% of New York inhabitants express reservations about general crime and daily safety. This figure marks a considerable drop from the 59% recorded the previous year.
Of all towns and cities in the regional area, only Oneonta made the cut within the top 10, claiming the 4th position. Let’s take a more detailed look at how other areas within the state performed according to this safety ranking.
SafeWise designated Oneonta as the fourth safest city in the state. The report associates Oneonta with a violent crime rate of about 0.24 crimes per 1,000 inhabitants, alongside a property crime rate of 4.42 per 1,000 individuals.
Vestal Town, on the other hand, trailed at the 23rd position with a violent crime rate of 0.47 per 1,000 people. In terms of property crime rates, the area presented a significantly higher figure of 20.77 per 1,000 residents.
Following closely, Elmira City was ranked 26th, recording a violent crime rate of 3.21 per 1,000 inhabitants. Figures for property crimes were relatively lower at 14.69 per 1,000 residents.
Situated toward the lower end of this ranking was Cortland City, landing in the 40th spot. Residents of Cortland face a violent crime rate of 3.49 per 1,000 people. As for property crimes, the city’s rate stood at a rather high figure of 32.24 per 1,000 citizens.
Binghamton City emerged immediately ahead of the final standings, securing the 49th position. This was followed by other municipalities including Jamestown, Buffalo, Albany, and Rochester, in that sequence, concluding the list of 53 cities and towns evaluated by SafeWise.
According to SafeWise’s account, Binghamton City posed a violent crime rate of 6.63 per 1,000 individuals. Meanwhile, the property crime rate in the area reached 35.98 per 1,000 citizens.
In line with New York State’s official records, the figure for violent crimes reported by the Binghamton City Police Department showed a decrease from 316 in 2023, down to 272 in 2024. Unfortunately, statistical data for 2025 remained absent from the state dataset.
Furthermore, a state report dated May indicated a surge in incidents involving shootings and gunshot victims in Binghamton during the first four months of 2025. This trend reflects a marked increase compared to the equivalent time frame in 2024.
The SafeWise provide an enumeration of the ten cities leading the safety ranking across New York. These, in order from top to bottom, include Bedford, Carmel, Rye, Oneonta, Hyde Park, East Fishkill, Scarsdale, Yorktown, Saugerties, and finally the Town of Ogden.
These data points offer pronounced insight into the potential influences of regional safety measures, local department efficiency, and community-driven crime deterrence in shaping overall security ratings.
It’s essential to understand the ratings are encapsulated snapshots, and may not fully capture the broader complexities of safety and crime within each municipally in New York state.
Lastly, while it’s heartening to see the drop in the percentage of New Yorkers who worry daily about crime and safety, it remains crucial to maintain and improve upon current regional security measures.
The hope is that the safety rankings ostensibly stimulate strategized efforts by municipalities towards establishing safer and more secure environments for their respective residents.
