Ossoff Grills Unprepared Vought Over Shocking CDC Cutbacks

A hearing at the Senate Appropriations Committee witnessed a contentious exchange between the Director of the Office of Management and Budget, Russell Vought, and Senator Jon Ossoff from Georgia. The subject was about the aggressive cuts purportedly being made under President Trump’s administration to the federal workforce, particularly focusing on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). As a key figure in ‘Project 2025’, Vought was evasive when questioned about the massive reduction in CDC’s workforce, approximately by a quarter, and a drastic decrease in the 2026 fiscal year budget by 50%.

Whenever Vought attempted to deflect to the Biden administration’s reforms, Ossoff cutoff him, reminding him that he was there to represent the Trump administration and its policies. ‘You are here to speak about the Trump administration, not to herald or downplay the Biden administration,’ Ossoff pointed out repeatedly. This rapid deflection to Biden’s administration perhaps suggests a lack of preparedness or defensiveness about the fiscal decisions under scrutiny.

What added fuel to the fire was the administration’s audacious request to slash $9.4 billion from global health and foreign aid programs, along with public broadcasting. This supposed streamlining was introduced by the Department of Government Efficiency under the aegis of tech mogul Elon Musk. It is perhaps a sign of the times when the richest man in the world is advising on major cuts in public spending.

Ossoff applied relentless pressure on Vought, drilling into what he described as ‘errors’ at the CDC. This included the reinstatement of employees who had only recently been laid off. Subsequently, shedding doubt on the efficacy and competence of administration’s management. Bringing in question the future of those working for arguably one of the most essential public health agencies.

‘Mr. Vought, have you ever set foot into the CDC?’, queried Ossoff with an air of incredulity. To which Vought responded with a succinct ‘No.’ It is remarkable that the individual spearheading significant cuts to an institution has never spent time to understand its inner workings or its inherent value in detail.

Ossoff took this opportunity to emphasize the importance of the institution Vought was so casually relegating, ‘The CDC is our nation’s primary public health agency, and indeed globally recognized as such.’ This served as a reminder and a jibe at the Director’s ignorance or disregard of the CDC’s value.

In response to Ossoff’s questioning, Vought insisted on the need for reform, a rhetoric that the Biden administration had also touted, indicating potential drawbacks with the agency. However, the way Vought questions CDC’s competence is concerning as it undermines the critical role of the agency during the pandemic.

Vought was caught off-guard when Ossoff retorted sharply, ‘Are you saying that you intentionally terminated or attempted to terminate a quarter of the CDC workforce?’ Unfortunately, Vought displayed a surprising lack of insight into his own policies, claiming he did not have the specific details and deflected the question to the CDC director nominee, Susan Monarez.

Vought’s inability to provide a direct response to the question was met with increasing criticism and, no doubt, rising dissatisfaction. Ossoff repeatedly challenged him with the same question, forcing Vought to face the reality of the policies he’s promoting.

Finally, Vought was cornered into accepting that the Trump administration was indeed trying to shear down the CDC, with him justifying that ‘They were incompetent during the last pandemic.’ Perhaps we could all do better, but his critique lays bare a misguided understanding of the CDC’s instrumental role.

Ossoff further suggested that Vought visit CDC’s headquarters in Atlanta, pinpointing the disastrous impact that his decisions were having. ‘You are wreaking havoc on this institution,’ he accused Vought, indicating an understanding of the broader implications of these reductions.

‘You have relentlessly pursued the firing of nearly a quarter of CDC’s workforce, and for FY26, you’re attempting to chop off more than half the CDC budget,’ Ossoff conveyed forcefully, painting a grim picture of the missteps taken.

Ossoff reinforced the figure that Vought was so blithely disregarding, saying, ‘Regardless of your past criticism and their past performance, they are vital to public health and epidemiological defense in the United States.’ This powerful retort emphasized the danger of undermining such an essential organization.

‘You’re sapping morale, you’re crippling capability, and you’re debasing the lives of my constituents,’ continued Ossoff heatedly, pushing back against the dismantling of an irreplaceable institution. He incorporated his constituents showing personal concern and the potential detrimental effects on their lives.

Only on this note did Vought deign to agree, albeit with a slightly facetious tone, ‘Gladly,’ he responded, to the fervent insistence of a visit to the CDC. His agreement, while on the surface may seem like progress, feels like it lacks the genuine intent needed in such a situation.
