A recent publication delving into the unimpressive presidential venture of Vice President Harris has reopened wounds within the Democratic party. The book, titled ‘Fight: Inside the Wildest Battle for the White House,’ paints a picture of Harris as an unfit candidate with a discordant team, amplifying the skepticism that pervaded among top Democrats, even as they nudged President Biden into oblivion.
The newly unveiled narrative unveils nebulous details of the Democratic Party’s internal squabbles over whether Presidency and Biden’s candidacy was viable, and Harris’s mismanaged campaign. Interestingly, the Democratic seniors held reservations about the political longevity of Biden due to concerns about his cognitive sharpness.
Likewise, they feared an inadvertent rise of Harris, deemed inept, to the nomination if Biden conceded. As Biden faced mounting pressure to withdraw, his chief allies reportedly warned benefactors that Harris would emerge as the party’s ‘mistake’ choice, should the former bow out.
Biden’s deteriorating performance in the spring of 2024, during a period of intense deliberation within party seniors on possible replacements, set alarms ringing. Among the alarmed was former President Obama, who decidedly objected to the idea of Harris as the presidential candidate.
The book asserts that Obama, the 44th president, instead hoped for the party to nominate Michigan’s governor, Gretchen Whitmer, with the VP seat going to Maryland’s governor, Wes Moore. These preferences highlight the reluctance towards Harris which was not confined to Biden’s camp.
Indeed, even as Biden decided to withdraw from his race, he was unprepared to give his endorsement to Harris without reservation. The ex-president refrained from declaring support for any candidate when announcing his exit, further spotlighting the lack of trust in Harris.
Yet, despite the unspoken skepticism, Harris reportedly solicited Biden’s support in private. Framing her ascendancy as a crucial aspect of Biden’s legacy, she called upon him hastily to anoint her as his successor.
Ultimately, Biden declared his suspension of the campaign after roughly thirty minutes of his announcement, he publicly extended his endorsement to Harris, in a move that left many perplexed.
The Election came as an unpleasant shocker for Harris, who was woefully unprepared for her defeat. According to the book, Harris sought solace in shifting some of the blame for her electoral failure onto Biden.
She rationalized to her confidants that a change in the election’s timing, either by entering the race sooner or later, would have seen her victorious. This irrational line of thinking placed the fault squarely on Biden for her stone-cold campaign.
However, the book suggests that even her closest affiliates didn’t line up behind this perspective. Her assertions were contested, with many believing Biden’s role to be just an excuse for her underperformance.
Meanwhile, as the book hits the stands, Harris is reportedly weighing options for her next political ambition – a run for the governorship of California or another roll of the presidential dice.
However, her political trajectory so far, as chronicled by ‘Fight: Inside the Wildest Battle for the White House,’ does not offer a promising outlook for any future endeavors. Only time will tell whether she can turn around the dismal reputation that seems to precede her.
