Potential Early Exit: Biden’s Reelection Woes Intensify

Pinning their hopes on a timely exit, Democrats are quietly putting pressure on President Joe Biden to prematurely stall his campaign for reelection. The Bidens are reportedly exploring the possibility of him stepping down, painting an unflattering image of an administration on the rocks. This news, shared by two insiders speaking to NBC News, offers an intriguing look into the downsides of a problematic Biden campaign.

The discussions in question, as expected, include Jill Biden, Hunter Biden, and Biden’s sister and political adviser, Valerie Owens. The focus is on the tangible and psychological strain imposed by the campaign on Biden’s overall health, his immediate family, and more broadly the direction of the nation. It remains to be seen whether the Bidens consider the president’s increased fragility, a controversial topic of late, as central to this debate.

Joe Biden’s campaign spokesperson, Jen O’Malley Dillon, tried to paint an optimistic picture on MSNBC’s Morning Joe, saying that Biden is poised to be the official nominee in the upcoming convention. However, this claim starkly contrasts with the dissent brewing both within and outside the Biden clan. Caught in this schism, Biden offered a vague response devoid of any confirmation about his future plans as a candidate.

On the contrary, Biden vaguely stated he would campaign against Trump, sidestepping any solid confirmation about whether he would act as the nominee. Proclaiming he would focus on discrediting Trump’s Project 2025 and advocating for his own leadership seemed more of an evasive act than a clear battle plan. His assertion of ‘saving our democracy’ appears just as hollow given the ongoing disturbances in his own campaign.

Interestingly, Biden’s support in Congress began to crumble significantly on a fateful Friday, providing another piece of evidence that his leadership is faltering. One of the most significant detractors to make their stance public is Rep. Marc Veasey of Texas, who holds the distinction of being the pioneer African-American Congressman to withdraw their support from Biden. In a jarring statement, he along with several other lawmakers appealed for the termination of Biden’s campaign for the greater good of the country.

This plea went public with the sting of betrayal, ‘With great admiration for you personally, sincere respect for your decades of public service…’, they started before delivering the hard blow by urging Biden to “pass the torch to a new generation of Democratic leaders”. It’s clear the group’s discomfort isn’t an isolated sentiment, more Congressional Democrats are likely to echo this call as time passes.

Political stalwarts like Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, and former Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi have reportedly been orchestrating their attempts to maneuver Biden out of his position from behind the scenes. Interestingly, one would not often see such rigorous attempts to dethrone a sitting president within their own party, highlighting the perceived flaw in Biden’s potential candidature.

Even Biden’s mentor and former President, Barack Obama, was reported to have serious reservations about the possible pitfalls of having Biden run for reelection. Other Congressional Democrats, including vulnerable senators like Jon Tester of Montana and Martin Heinrich of New Mexico, have joined the growing disconcerted chorus, showcasing the fragility of Biden’s position.

Biden’s age and cognitive abilities are causing widespread concern and have put his candidacy on shaky ground, especially so following his disastrous debate performance against Trump. Despite the growing tidal wave of criticism, Biden has fiercely clung on to the notion that he remains the party’s nominee. However, with the path he’s on, it seems like it would take an intervention from ‘God Almighty’ for him to step down.

Biden retreated to his home in Rehoboth Beach, Del., right after revealing that he tested positive for COVID. Keeping in line with his retreat from active participation, the White House has not announced any public events for him, reaffirming that his time in the spotlight may be running out. His avoidance of the public’s eye only lends credence to the whispers of his wavering candidacy.

Biden indicated in a recent interview that he would consider bowing out of the race if a serious health condition were to develop. The ambiguous certainty of his future continues to be a topic of speculation as his doctor publicly claimed he was only experiencing mild symptoms, with his vitals remaining within normal parameters while being treated with Paxlovid.

While the doctor’s report seems optimistic, it doesn’t reconcile with the image of a firm and active president that is necessary for a challenging campaign run. Signs from the Biden family also seem contradictory as they evidently are reluctant about making a quick decision. This indecisiveness perhaps reflects the realization of the magnitude of the possible flaws in a potential Biden run, illustrating the ongoing dilemma around his reelection campaign.
