Richard J. Fox, a 61-year-old man from Buffalo was last publicly photographed as a registered sex offender prior to his arrest concerning the alleged 2021 murder of Marquita Mull, a woman in her 50s also from Buffalo. This incident occurred after she mysteriously vanished and afterwards, her body was discovered off a trail within Chautauqua County. Accompanying her remains was that of an unidentified woman.
Moving forward, Fox faced arraignment linked to a second homicide that was tied to a remote trail in northern Chautauqua County. This arraignment process unfolded before Erie County Court Judge Suzanne Maxwell Barnes who oversaw Fox’s indictment. The charges raised against him were two counts of second-degree murder.
The case alleges that Fox, 62 at the time of the court proceedings, intentionally caused the untimely demise of Cassandra Watson in the time period of 2002 and 2004. The alleged crime scene is believed to be a locale within Buffalo. As per prosecution, Fox hatched the deadly plan and executed it single-handedly.
On the 26th of September, 2021, a hiker stumbled upon a human skull whilst enjoying a stroll along Chautauqua Rails to Trails near Woleben Road situated in the town of Portland. The local authorities, subsequently, recovered skeletal remains from the site the day following the discovery.
Forensic experts, upon inspecting the human remains, deduced that the remains had been deposited at the site for a period exceeding a decade. Emerging from a labyrinth of uncertainty two months later, the identity of the deceased was established in December of 2024.
It was then revealed that Fox allegedly maintained a relationship with the now identified victim during the era of her sudden disappearance. However, her disappearance was not formally reported to law enforcement leading to a further deepening of the mystery surrounding her death.
The murder charge filed against Fox doesn’t end here. Late in June of the year 2021, he was again alleged to have intentionally caused the demise of another woman in Buffalo. 50-year-old Marquita Mull, as she was later identified, ended up reported as missing by her own family.
Fast forward three months later, on the 27th of September 2021, investigators chanced upon a body. This body, in the course of the probe into the skeletal remains found earlier near the Chautauqua County hiking trail, was later identified as the missing Marquita Mull.
Fox is to appear in court again for a pre-trial conference set for Wednesday, April 30, at 9:30 in the morning. The judge has elected to continue his confinement without the possibility of bail in light of the severity of the charges raised against him.
If found guilty of the charges of second-degree murder, Fox could potentially face a maximum sentence ranging from 50 years to a life term in prison. The severity of the sentence underscores the magnitude of the allegations levelled against him.
Owing to the tireless efforts from a multi-agency investigation squad, prosecutors announced an indictment against Fox in addition to revealing the identity of the second victim. The families of victims Cassandra Watson and Marquita Mull have been clinging to the hope of receiving answers to their prolonged agony.
