In a strong display of unity, 22 Republican governors have thrown their support behind President Donald Trump’s Senate-backed budget reconciliation resolution, calling on Congress to move quickly and deliver a bill that reflects the will of the American people. The governors’ joint letter, issued on April 7, is a clear signal that the party’s leadership at both the state and federal levels is aligned behind Trump’s economic and national security vision.
The governors outlined five key priorities they say must be addressed without delay:
Securing the Border: Governors blasted the consequences of the Biden-era open border policies, highlighting the ongoing strain on state resources due to unchecked illegal immigration. The reconciliation bill includes significant funding to finish the wall and empower law enforcement.
Unleashing American Energy: The letter demands the removal of burdensome regulations to restore energy independence, boost domestic production, and bring down costs for working families.
Restoring Military Strength: With global threats on the rise, the governors called for increased defense funding to rebuild America’s armed forces and deter adversaries.
Ending Reckless Spending: The coalition urged Congress to take meaningful action to reduce waste, reject bloated liberal programs, and protect American taxpayers from job-killing tax hikes.
Avoiding Fiscal Disaster: While raising the debt ceiling, they stressed the importance of doing so responsibly—by pairing it with real, enforceable spending cuts.
The Senate’s budget resolution, which passed with Republican support, would extend the 2017 Trump tax cuts, raise the debt ceiling by $5 trillion, and deliver a major infusion of cash into border security and defense. While it includes far fewer spending cuts than the House version—roughly $4 billion compared to the House’s $2 trillion—Trump has given the Senate plan his full endorsement.
“This is a strong plan,” Trump stated. “It includes everything we need: border security, massive spending cuts, and permanent tax cuts for working Americans. Now it’s time for the House to act.”
Some House conservatives have voiced concern over the reduced spending cuts, but the governors’ letter makes it clear: the time for delay is over. They argue the reconciliation package is essential to restoring fiscal discipline and advancing core Republican priorities.
The governors also emphasized that this moment is a test of leadership. Failure to act, they warned, would only embolden the left and delay urgently needed reforms.
“This is not just a policy decision—it’s a leadership moment,” one governor noted. “We must stand united behind the President and show the American people we are serious about delivering results.”
With Trump leading the charge and governors across the country backing him, the pressure is now on House Republicans to act. The message from the states is loud and clear: it’s time to get the job done.
