The robotic creature, dubbed ‘Oppy’, assumes the role of a security guard, with its shift starting as soon as the workers depart for the day. Equipped with lidar technology and artificial intelligence, its design draws on the blending elements of a robotic canine and an autonomous Waymo car, used as its operational model.
It roams the site using its built-in lidar and artificial intelligence systems. Sending live feed back to the command center through an installed camera, Oppy securely patrols the corridors and accessible areas after the last worker has clocked out.
The next level of functionality kicks in when a threat has been perceived through these security camera feeds. Upon detection, Oppy is dispatched to the location of the unusual activity. It has the ability to trigger an alarm, alert the police and even enable operators back at the command centre to communicate via Oppy.
Implementing automated security solutions like Oppy offers advantages over traditional options. Not only are these robotic guards less demanding in terms of logistics and resources, but they also prove cost-effective when compared to maintaining a squad of human security guards on payroll.
Such innovative solutions are top priority in today’s construction industry given the growing problem of theft. Predictably, robotics is emerging as an effective solution to this challenge, akin to the influence drones began to exert half a decade ago.
An interesting observation is that robotics is at the stage where drone technology was five years prior, and going by the current trends, robots could likely define the future of security management in the next half-decade.
These advancements in technology not only allocated resources more efficiently but also ensured the complete securing of the premises in the absence of security staff.
Therefore, the future of security, especially for construction sites, looks promising, with technology turning into an ally in the fight against crime. With robots like Oppy being tested, the phase of pioneering solutions in security methods is being ushered in.
Granted, there will still be challenges in implementing and refining these high-tech security measures. This technology, however, holds noteworthy potential to revolutionize security applications, subject to ongoing evolution and improvement.
