Rory McIlroy Plans Schedule Readjustments for 2025 PGA Tour

Renowned golfer Rory McIlroy expressed the possibility of making notable adjustments to his competition calendar in 2025, in light of a tough climax to this season on the PGA Tour. McIlroy was triumphant on two occasions this season on the PGA Tour, winning hand-in-hand with Shane Lowry at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans, and later earning the Wells Fargo Championship. However, his pursuit of a fifth major title has carried over to a fifth year.

At the age of 35, McIlroy had a two-shot advantage that he unfortunately lost during the final moments leading to a second-place finish at the US Open in June. He then paused for three weeks – his longest break throughout the year – which was followed by a promising show at the Genesis Scottish Open but unfortunately got cut at The Open.

The Paris Olympics also saw McIlroy vying for a medal before participating in all three FedExCup playoffs. An ending at tied-ninth spot in the season-ender Tour Championship marked his sixth performance within an eight-week timeframe.

Reflecting on everything, McIlroy expressed – ‘We faced a deluge of tournaments one after another and having Olympics too, kind of bundled everything closer. The season was exhausting, and it compels me to consider integrating extra leisure times thereon.’

Despite that, the global rankings show McIlroy is slated for five more tours in this year’s DP World Tour, edging his count to 27 matches, the most he’s played since 2010. McIlroy harbors plans to modify his 2025 calendar accordingly.

Off the course, McIlroy confessed he tended to take part in around 22 events annually. But he acknowledged that times have changed since his twenties and his responsibilities have grown. Moving forward, he plans to limit his appearances to between 18 and 20 every year.

Beginning six strokes adrift of Scottie Scheffler at the Tour Championship, McIlroy was reminded of the same deficit he surmounted on his route to a third FedExCup victory in 2022. However, this time around, better performance eluded him, as he ended a full 14 shots behind the world’s number one player.

McIlroy was forthright about his comparison with Scheffler this season: ‘He’s been tallying more birdies and fewer bogeys than me. This factually places him in a slightly superior position.’

What caught McIlroy’s attention about Scheffler was his impressive number of rounds without a bogey. ‘A quick look at his record over the last two or three years will show you a series of four-under par rounds without a single bogey. It may not sound exceptional, but it’s evidence of his solidity. He hardly puts himself in a jeopardous position. Thus, with fewer bogeys, his peers must do something extraordinary to match him.’

As for McIlroy’s forthcoming calendar, following the end of the FedExCup season he takes a week off, before shifting his attention back to Europe for consecutive DP World Tour events. He is committed to the Amgen Irish Open from September 12-15 at the Royal County Down Golf Club, and will take center stage a week later at the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth.

In October, McIlroy will take part in the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship in Scotland, where he will play with his father Gerry. In November, he heads for the Middle East for the last two events of the DP World Tour Season.

His November schedule includes the new DP World Tour Play-offs which feature the Abu Dhabi Championship followed by the DP World Tour Championship, both being part of the Rolex Series. In them, he will be competing for his sixth Race to Dubai win.

The race for the Ryder Cup qualifications has begun with the British Masters. Luke Donald hopes to repeat his victory next September on American soil. A revamp was made to the criteria for qualifying for the 2025 competition in New York. McIlroy is resolute about ensuring his eighth straight Ryder Cup appearance without delay.

McIlroy asserts that the moment Rickie Fowler conceded a putt to Tommy Fleetwood on the 16th green, he started thinking of the next Ryder Cup at Bethpage. ‘I aiming to accumulate points early so I don’t need to rely on a pick. We had our team ready few months before Rome, aiming to repeat the same and know the chosen twelve for New York at the earliest.’
