Despite the explicit nature of the laptop’s content, the timing and origins of its discovery painted a dubious picture, giving the impression of an October surprise favoring the Trump administration.
When the results revealed a defeat for Trump, his allies focused on our letter as a tool for distortion. Their response was far from unexpected, as they built a strawman argument to twist our words and create false narratives. These forcefully inserted deceptive intentions attributed to our letter were far from its original purpose, yet served to embroil the narrative further.
Some of Trump’s supporters have taken this a step further, moving from distortion to aggression. The self-proclaimed ‘Secretary of Retribution’, Ivan Raiklin, drafted our names for a questionable list. Mr Raiklin’s intentions were articulated in an obvious threatening manner, stating he intended to expose each signatory by name, place, date and so on.
Our identification by Raiklin, for unspecified transgressions, was presented as an initiation for societal ostracization. Raiklin’s disturbing objectives are to make the signatories subject to public scrutiny at both digital and physical forums, which seemed unnecessarily malicious and divisive, given the political circumstances.
The criticism is misled, however, as all signatories were retired professionals, with no misuse of classified information or unscrupulous liaisons with the CIA.
