Security Tightens at Mar-a-Lago Following Attack on Former President

In a move demonstrating an increased commitment to security, officials recently implemented stronger protective measures around Trump’s famed Mar-a-Lago estate in Palm Beach. A key road within the vicinity, South Ocean Boulevard, is set to close 24/7 beginning from Woodbridge Road right up to the Southern Boulevard traffic circle. This regulatory change, implemented post the regrettable attack on the former President, aims to remain in effect at least till the upcoming November general elections.

The necessity of this move is underscored by a positive assertion from the Palm Beach Police Department. Crediting unprecedented security requirements involving the Mar-a-Lago and the U.S. Secret Service’s responsibility towards the former President, the proactive step aims to ensure seamless safety measures. An official statement starkly confirmed this obligation, emphasizing that the safety and security of their protectees never cease to be the U.S. Secret Service’s utmost priority.

However, the specifics of our safety protocols would compromise operational security, therefore, are kept confidential. This new strategy differs from the temporary roadblocks created during his term from 2017 to 2021, which were erected upon his arrival and lifted upon his departure, with extended periods of closure during festive times with family being exceptions.

This unprecedented road closure for such a sizable duration next to Mar-a-Lago is the first in the history of the town. It coincides with an observed spike in the traffic due to a tidal wave of new residents and visitors post the COVID-19 pandemic. The town’s management is strategizing contingency plans to mitigate any potential traffic disruption.

Council member Bridget Moran expressed, albeit with concern over the potential traffic effects, a solid recognition of the need for these security measures around Trump while he is staying in his Mar-a-Lago residence. She conveyed her hopes of investigating options that could offset the affected traffic while demonstrating understanding towards the unique situation we are in.

Town Manager, Kirk Blouin, echoed these sentiments and revealed that the town will commence exploration of such alternatives. He communicated his current standpoint to the Daily News that shutting down the road indefinitely seems unwarranted, unless mandated. His views are fueled by the conviction that everyone, regardless of political beliefs, deserves necessary safety measures. However, he also expressed intent to balance this notion by exploring other possible solutions.

In order to proceed further with this decision, Blouin revealed intentions of seeking an official letter from the Secret Service, ordering the closure of South Ocean Boulevard. Without any protectee residing at Mar-a-Lago, he argued, it does not warrant the closure. However, the ultimate determination, he pointed out, may lie with the council.

Turning to the past, it was highlighted that in May of 2023, the Secret Service and Mar-a-Lago received clearance to establish a guardhouse at the club’s main entrance on South Ocean Boulevard. This development was driven by the need for improved, enduring protection for the former President and his family. It also served as an added safeguard for Secret Service agents in charge of screening each individual entering the premises.

The guardhouse installation had been part of the Town Council’s approval, imposing a requirement for Mar-a-Lago’s security team and the Secret Service to collaborate with the town for rejigging an obsolete traffic management plan. This plan previously fell short of acknowledging the enhanced security environment around a former President taking residence and the uptick in event attendees at Mar-a-Lago.

The historic landmark Mar-a-Lago, true to its name ‘ocean to lake’, nestles between the westward Intracoastal Waterway and the east-facing Atlantic Ocean. During Trump’s presidential term and his visits to Palm Beach, the U.S. Coast Guard monitored boat traffic in both waterfronts meticulously. The challenge was amplified by the bustling roads, namely South Ocean and Southern Boulevards, that envelope the property.

Since the lamentable attempt on Trump’s life during the rally, protective measures have been put under review at Trump’s properties. The security levels were additionally ramped up at the Trump Tower in New York City the following Saturday evening. This incident prompted action from his campaign directing staff to steer clear of campaign offices in West Palm Beach and Washington, D.C.

The news of the road closure was announced just hours ahead of Trump’s speaking engagement at the closing evening of the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. It is worth noting that the former President has refrained from visiting Palm Beach since the incident, he was treated for his injuries and spent time in his club in Bedminster, N.J., before proceeding to Wisconsin for the convention.
