In the midst of escalating concern over Russia’s continued aggression against Ukraine, American Senator Lindsey Graham has leveled a warning at countries, such as India, that maintain commerce with Moscow. The Senator warned that these countries may soon find themselves grappling with devastating economic costs.
The Senator declared his caution during a broadcasted conversation, where he explained that he and fellow Senator Richard Blumenthal had attracted substantial bipartisan support in the Senate. Their aim is to advance a far-reaching set of sanctions focused on those nations that are fortifying Russia’s war campaign via trade, most notably through the trading of oil and petroleum products.
Graham divulged that the proposed legislative sanctions would empower the U.S. President with the capacity to implement tariffs of up to 500 per cent on any nation that contributes to Russia’s war cause. The President has the discretion to adjust the tariff charge as needed, with a range extending from 0 to 500 per cent.
Countries such as India, China, and Brazil were pointedly criticized by Senator Graham for their continued interactions with Moscow. The Senator censured India’s procurement of Russian oil at lower rates, and implied that its resale of these supplies indirectly contributes to sustaining Putin’s military activities.
The advocacy for stringent economic countermeasures arrives at a time when the President is considering additional assistance for Ukraine. This decision comes in the light of speculation that Russia may gain substantial territorial control by the upcoming year if Ukraine’s drone and artillery resources continue to be limited.
Additionally, Graham hinted at impending declarations pertaining to the sale of arms and the allocation of confiscated Russian assets, which could be redirected towards fortifying Ukraine’s line of defense.
Making it clear that diplomacy with Moscow has been hitherto ineffective, Graham emphasized that a powerful economic clampdown might be the only viable path towards terminating the conflict.
