As the 2028 presidential election looms, the Democratic party seems to be in a state of disarray, grappling between potential candidates. Popular assumption may lead one to think that ex-Vice President Kamala Harris, despite failing in the 2024 polls against President Donald Trump, would be the preferred choice. However, a recent survey from Yale University proves this assumption wrong. It reveals the polarizing New York Congresswoman, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez – or AOC as she is fondly called by some – is closing in on Harris’s popularity.
The survey reveals an interesting twist – 27.5% of those polled would vote for Harris, suggesting her popularity hasn’t entirely waned despite her previous election loss. Conversely, AOC isn’t too far behind, with a 21.3% backing. It’s quite intriguing to observe such support for an inexperienced Congresswoman, perhaps signaling the Democratic party’s shift towards more radical, progressive agendas.
Further down the popularity ladder are relatively known figures, such as Pete Buttigieg (14%) – the erstwhile U.S. Transportation Secretary and 2020 presidential candidate, California Governor Gavin Newsom (6.4%), and Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro (4.6%). Statistically lower positions were occupied by less prominent individuals, including Arizona Senator Mark Kelly (3.6%), Illinois Governor JB Pritzker (3.3%), and even non-political personalities like entrepreneur and investor Mark Cuban (3.2%) and ESPN host Stephen A. Smith (1%).
AOC’s increase in popularity is quite baffling, given her far-left leaning ideologies within the Democratic Party. From obscurity to political limelight, the 35-year-old Congresswoman, representing a majority Black and brown district in the Bronx and Queens, has indeed traversed a peculiar path ever since she unseated seasoned Rep. Joe Crowley of New York’s 14th District in the 2018 primary election.
More confusing is the support gained by AOC who had no prior political history and lately managed bars. Yet, she now serves, rather ironically, as the vice ranking member of the House Committee on Oversight and Accountability. It seems the Democratic Party now rewards lack of experience and radical stances.
AOC’s newfound popularity might also stem from her ‘Fighting Oligarchy’ tour across the nation. Partnered with Bernie Sanders, an adamant advocate for socialist policies, the duo’s campaign against Trump and wealth inequality reportedly garnered tens of thousands of voters per stop. The total turnout is claimed to be more than 200,000.
Meanwhile, Kamala Harris has been attempting to strengthen her fading image among potential Democratic presidential hopefuls. In spite of wielding greater name recognition, Harris has been striving to engage with the electorate proactively. Her focus on issues like Black Maternal Health Week could be seen as a last-ditch attempt to regain traction.
Contextually, Harris underlined the urgency for action surrounding Black maternal health initiatives. In her words, ‘our fight remains more important than ever’ and that the struggle to ensure every woman has access to health care was ongoing. This statement could be seen as an attempt to divert attention from her previous national level failures.
Harris’s statement, however, seemed paradoxical considering the current state of women’s health research and Black maternal health initiatives under her watch. The damage had already been done and the ex-vice president’s sudden interest appeared rather reactionary than proactive. This laid bare the problem of performative politics, especially after losing at the grand stage.
While Harris hasn’t completely closed the door on another presidential run, she seems to be hedging her bets by also considering running for California governor in 2026. Could this be an indication of her dwindling confidence in securing the Grand Old Party’s nomination? Only time will tell.
The startling aspect in these unfolding political sagas is the Democratic Party’s slide towards the fringe elements. It’s worth asking, is supporting the likes of AOC who lauded anti-billionaire ideologies the best solution for America’s future, or is it an indication of looming chaos?
It seems that some Democrats may be starting to believe that the appeal of radical ideologies could trump experience and rational judgment. A significant part of the party appears to overlook the potential risks that such untested and radical ideas could pose to the long-term stability and prosperity of the nation.
Setting a precedent for the party’s tilt towards such ideologies, despite bearing the risk of alienating the centrist voters, could potentially prove to be a major political gamble. The 2024 elections where Harris, despite being a decorated individual, lost to Trump is a stark reminder of this underlying factor.
As seen with AOC, it’s evident that charisma and youthful energy are seeping into the Democratic Party’s assessment of potential candidates. However, we must ask, can this substitute for the absence of experience and a tested, rational political approach?
