SonyLIV, an Indian streaming service, has ambitious plans as it begins unraveling its highly anticipated 2025 content rotation. The forthcoming lineup is poised to underline authentic narratives and methodical sports content. The star attraction of their offerings comes in the form of a series dubbed ‘Real Kashmir Football Club.’ The drama series draws inspiration from the intriguing history of Kashmir’s debut professional football faction.
During a conversation with Variety, Danish Khan, the driving force behind SonyLIV and Studio Next, endows the drama with great esteem. According to Khan, the series is something ‘we are incredibly thrilled about,’ branding it as a defining production. The series shares the same level of anticipation as ‘Scam’ and ‘Rocket Boys.’
Khan openly showed excitement, expressing how the new series perfectly embroiders the SonyLIV brand ethos. He further extols, ‘It’s the kind of series we aim to produce. It impeccably aligns with our brand’s philosophy.’ The series puts a spotlight on hope, unfolding an unprecedented portrayal of Kashmir.
At its core, the Real Kashmir Football Club centers on the story of two influential individuals behind the formation of the region’s inaugural professional football club. The series, brought to life by a collaboration between Jaya Entertainment and Oshun Entertainment, will feature well-known faces like Manav Kaul and Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub.
While the main emphasis of SonyLIV’s 2025 lineup is capturing genuine narratives, they’re also harvesting diversified content, offering 25 distinct series across five languages. Hindi, Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam, and Bengali are the chosen languages, reflecting the diversity of India.
One of the most awaited series in the Hindi language category is ‘Scam 2010: The Subrata Roy Saga,’ a continuation of the exploration of India’s most significant alleged financial misconduct cases, with renowned director Hansal Mehta at the helm.
Other notable entries in the Hindi section include the fourth season of ‘Maharani’ which transitions its location from Bihar to Delhi. The storyline looks towards the new generation. Also, the second season of ‘Freedom at Midnight’ delves into the intricate history of Kashmir’s integration and the division of Punjab and Bengal.
SonyLIV understands the importance of diversifying its content endowment, with an increased focus on content from other regional languages. As a triumph of this effort, Telugu-language series ‘Maya Sabha’ soars to the title of ‘the highest viewed Telugu web series in India,’ with an impressive reach of eight million viewers.
To build on this success, the streaming service is set to launch the second season of ‘Brinda,’ starring Trisha Krishnan, and ‘Black & White’ directed by Praveen Sattaru. As Khan asserts, SonyLIV remains unfaltering in its commitment to commissioning intelligent content for India’s upper-class, educated demographic.
Khan further voiced SonyLIV’s commitment towards rendering utterly authentic, meticulously scripted content, highlighting authenticity as a prime importance, instead of banking on high-profile casting. ‘We usually don’t cast megastars, but we focus on casting actors who naturally fit into the characters,’ Khan clarifies.
SonyLIV remains firmly anchored in their conservative budgeting strategy. Khan expounded on this, saying when a series becomes profitable consistently, it augments their ability to experiment with new ideas. However, he warns, if the budget mounts, the flexibility to take on experimental directions shrinks.
The SonyLIV sports collection is an impressive catalog, featuring the esteemed UEFA Champions League, Europa League, Bundesliga, ATP Tennis, French Open, Australian Open, along with cricket bilateral series with England, New Zealand, and Sri Lanka. In their non-scripted domain, ‘Shark Tank India’ embarks on its fifth season, a series which Khan labels ‘the most lucrative standalone show in India currently,’ praised for its viral tendencies.
Looking forward, SonyLIV has its sight set on further regional expansion, specifically aiming at the Marathi and Bengali-language markets once the ongoing regional operations are consolidated. The Punjabi market is also viewed upon as a future prospect. Additionally, two indigenous reality IPs are in the pipeline, one centered around comedy and another surrounding a broad reality theme, with the comedy show anticipated to be launched in the next two to three quarters.
