‘Sopranos’ Star Says Tony And The Crew Would ‘Probably’ Back President Trump Today

“The Sopranos” actor Michael Imperioli suggested in a recent interview that if the iconic HBO series were made today, many of its central characters would likely be supporters of President Donald Trump.

Speaking with The Independent, Imperioli said the show’s themes centered heavily on the American dream, particularly through the lens of immigrant families. He argued that in today’s political climate, that backdrop would inevitably intersect with debates over immigration policy.

“The fact is that these characters are all immigrants,” Imperioli said, adding that many of them would “probably be Trump supporters, oddly enough.” He questioned how such characters might reconcile their immigrant roots with modern political positions, noting that many Italian immigrants who arrived in the United States decades ago were undocumented.

Imperioli is best known for playing Christopher Moltisanti, the volatile protégé of mob boss Tony Soprano, portrayed by the late James Gandolfini. “The Sopranos,” which aired from 1999 to 2007, is widely regarded as one of the most influential television dramas ever produced. Imperioli received four Emmy nominations for the role and won once for Best Supporting Actor in a Drama Series.

President Trump has previously been mentioned in discussions about the show’s characters. In a 2019 interview with The New York Times, series creator David Chase speculated about how Tony Soprano might view Trump, offering his own interpretation of the character’s likely opinion.

Imperioli’s recent comments stand in contrast to his own past remarks. In 2020, he embraced social media memes portraying “Sopranos” characters as supporters of Joe Biden, saying at the time that he was leaning into the political confusion between himself and his on-screen persona.

The renewed discussion underscores how the show’s themes of power, identity, and the American dream continue to resonate years after its finale, especially as political debates over immigration and populism remain front and center in national discourse.
