Paranoia seems to be the order of the day as the countdown to the midterm elections proceeds, with certain elements already formulating conspiracy theories. It seems that President Joe Biden and his henchmen are trembling at the prospect of a Trump-inspired overhaul in 2026. Their worst fear? A complete shift in federal authority, favouring those who respect the principles of the constitution over liberal wishful thinking.
Biden’s group appears to be worried about losing their stronghold as they see this as a threat to their liberal democracy. Their fear is embodied in the supposed warfare on voter rights, an issue pregnant with legal and political complexities. This ‘concern’ spans the hallowed interiors of the Supreme Court to the changed role of ICE, deploying scare tactics by insinuating a possible enforcement of the Insurrection Act.
The Supreme Court has been put under the microscope for its decisions pertaining to the Voting Rights Act and the controversial subject of racial gerrymandering. In 2013, the Supreme Court disposed of specific segments of the VRA, namely sections 4 and 5. These previously demanded that some state and local jurisdictions – mainly those with documented instances of substantial voter suppression – receive federal approval (or ‘preclearance’) prior to modifying their election systems.
Biden’s scaremongering goes a step further with claims that ongoing court deliberations about voting rights and gerrymandering could extensively reroute the distribution of power within the U.S. national political landscape. Moreover, the proposed changes to election laws are insinuated to potentially downgrade the voting influence of women by the Biden camp.
To add weight to this narrative, liberal institutions such as the Pew Research Center are drawn upon. Despite factual evidence of dwindling approval ratings for the Democratic Party, they contend that women are still 12% more likely to side with the Democrats than men. Authoritatively sensibilities are ignored in pursuit of popular support, thus insinuating that women lean more liberal than men on key political issues.
Claimed examples of these issues include abortion rights, gun control, environmental protection, and racial justice. This notion being championed by the Democrats particularly targets young women, aged 18 to 29, depicting them as vulnerable to liberal bureaucracy and suggesting they are in most danger of losing their ‘rights’.
The very suggestion that a firm government, steered by Trump and the GOP, would somehow relegate women’s interests indefinitely is pure scaremongering at its finest. One would expect better from the Democratic Party, but fear seems to be their preferred instrument to rally their ranks.
Trust in our democratic principles and institutions should be paramount, yet the Democrats appear to sway public opinion with threats and fear. If these fears were well-founded, the fate of our democratic endeavor indeed depends not on our institutions but on our collective determination to preserve it through fair ballot processes.
