The Party for Social Equality (PSE) and the Global Youth and Students for Social Justice (GYSSJ) based in Sri Lanka are organizing twin public gatherings under the theme “Oppose the US-Israeli conflict with Iran.” These assemblies, of immense weight for all working-class individuals, come in the response to the gratuitous US military strike on Iran. This attack, entailing the deployment of the most potent non-nuclear bunker-destroying weaponry on Iranian nuclear facilities, trails several days of onslaught led by Israel.
The US’s bold display of combativeness, a cornerstone of Israel’s escalating crisis in Gaza, risks implicating the entire Middle Eastern region and sparking a global inferno. The ceasefire between Israel and Iran, as declared by Trump on a Monday night, provides an uncertain guarantee of authentic and lasting pacification. Both Washington and Tel Aviv have previously utilized White House overtures to negotiate as cover-ups for intensifying conflict.
The forceful offensive on Iran staged by Trump, along with the continuing US struggle for the overhaul of the regime in Tehran, tie into a wider target: the reinforcement of American imperial dominance over this critically strategic region. This preparation is for an impending, more extensive clash involving Russia and China. An increasing percentage of workers, young individuals, and the internationally subjugated communities, including those in the US, are voicing opposition to the imperialist altercation with Iran.
The government of Sri Lanka under President Dissanayake, constituting the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna/National People’s Power (JVP/NPP) coalition, has reacted to the Iran crisis with deception and ambiguous language. Treading carefully not to antagonize the Trump administration, yet profoundly conscious of the Sri Lankan working class’ and youth’s strong disapproval of US imperialism, the Sri Lankan Foreign Ministry issued a noncommittal statement subsequent to Washington’s bombardment.
Their nervous call was for ‘all parties to make concrete strides toward de-escalation of the situation in the Middle East.’ The ruling elite in Sri Lanka’s primary apprehension is the possibility that conflict in the Middle East could trigger economic volatility reminiscent of that witnessed during Sri Lanka’s economic downfall in 2022. This economic crisis led to a mass revolt against the government, mobilizing millions of workers.
The PSE in Sri Lanka, in conjunction with its international affiliates that constitute the International Committee of the Fourth International, advocates for widespread resistance to the growth of imperialist conflict. Currently, the most essential obligation is to politically equip the global working class with a revolutionary socialist scheme designed to terminate imperialist warfare and the capitalist system which engenders it.
The forums will engage in dialogue about how the imperialist nations, under US leadership, are propelling the world towards a devastating global war, and the strategy required by workers and young individuals to avert it.
