This year, a 20% reduction in the country’s murder rates has been attributed to the stringent law and order policies implemented by President Donald Trump, according to information relayed by the White House on Tuesday. Jeff Asher, a reputable crime data expert, conducted an exhaustive study of the cities with the highest previous rates of homicide throughout the nation, wherein he uncovered a decrease of over 20% in their murder rates since 2024.
In response to these findings, the White House press secretary, Karoline Leavitt, communicated in a statement issued to The Daily Signal that the homicide rates have been significantly reduced all across the United States since the beginning of President Trump’s term. By setting a high bar when it comes to crime control, showing unequivocal support for law enforcement, and insisting on severe penalties for violent crime, President Trump has delivered on the promise to secure our communities, as per Leavitt’s words.
As presented in Jeff Asher’s analysis, murder rates dropped appreciably by early May in several major cities: 31.6% in Baltimore, 34.5% in St. Louis, 36.8% in Cleveland, and a staggering 63% in Denver. Southern cities like New Orleans also saw a reduction of 30.6%.
In both New York and Chicago, notorious for their high crime rates in past years, a descent was observed as well. Specifically, Asher found a decline of 26.8% in New York and a 23.7% fall in Chicago.
As of May 22, 2025, Philadelphia police had reported 88 homicides, which contrasts starkly with 201 murders being documented by the same date four years earlier, in 2021, as per the data available on the Philadelphia Police Department’s crime dashboard. Remarkably, the current-year’s count matches the historically low figures of 2014 and 2015.
This decline in homicide numbers is as dramatic as it was back in 2014, which is recognized as the year with the lowest recorded national murder rate. Asher suggests in his report that if the downward trend goes on until the Fall, considerations must be made regarding a potential record-breaking year for low murder rates.
However, Asher wisely cautions that it’s premature to commit to such a prediction, emphasizing instead the importance of noting and tracking the possibility of a new record-low murder rate.
The 2024 murder rate also showed a welcome decrease, bouncing back to levels seen before the COVID-era, following an alarming spike in 2020. This recovery is significant as it suggests a return to some societal normative statistics after the pandemic turmoil.
Throughout his term, President Trump has signed several executive orders aiming to lessen crime rates across the country. One of the most noteworthy among them was signed on his first day back in the White House – an order to Reinstate the Death Penalty and Safeguard Public Safety.

On April 28, a further order was signed to enable local law enforcement at the state level to ‘intrepidly chase criminals and safeguard American neighborhoods.’ These initiatives faithfully reflect Trump’s unwavering commitment towards imposing law and order on a national scale.
