Overseen by the innovative Elon Musk, the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) has drawn the intrigue and interest of individuals both nationally and globally. Their mission to tackle governmental waste has sparked a trend, even inspiring a university student to initiate a similar inquiry within his own educational environment. DOGE initiated a notable campaign on February 22, asking government workers to outline their weekly achievements via email, with the threat of job loss looming over noncompliant employees. While this approach was possibly divisive and eventually lost traction, it prompted strong action from a student in a notable Ivy League university.
A young academic known as Alex Shieh, attending his sophomore year at Brown University, was struck by DOGE’s approach and saw it as a method to seek clarity about his own tuition usage. He actioned this curiosity through a campaign reminiscent of that led by DOGE. Shieh began administering similar emails to non-teaching staff at Brown University, posing a simple but direct question inquiring about the specifics of their daily activities.
Shieh’s quest for transparency extended to a project he initiated known as Bloat@Brown. He established this platform as a ‘public database’ using artificial intelligence to catalogue and list the identities and job descriptions of 3,805 non-academic personnel at Brown University. The sophomore was particularly focussed on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) roles given the previous administration’s pledge to restrict funding to institutions maintaining such positions.
Echoing Elon Musk’s appeals to governmental workers to detail their contributions, Shieh posed the question, ‘What do you do all day?’ the consequences of his bold actions were far more severe than he could have anticipated. Despite his open invitation to the entirety of the highlighted staff, only 20 responses were received, with many containing crude language and unsavoury content.
Adding to the severity of the situation, Shieh’s personal and sensitive information such as his Social Security number was made public. He also experienced digital attacks, including his website being compromised and his email being swamped with unwanted subscriptions, some of which were explicit in nature. The university’s official newspaper, The Brown Daily Herald, published reports noting a formal investigation initiated against Shieh.
Elena Jiang, The Brown Daily Herald’s University News Editor, explained that Shieh’s activities possibly breached several clauses in the code of student conduct. ‘Emotional/Psychological Harm’, ‘Invasion of Privacy’, ‘Misrepresentation’ and ‘Violation of Operational Rules’ were potential violations according to a written communication from Kirsten Wolfe, Associate Director of Student Conduct and Community Standards.
Shieh’s intent behind launching the investigation was to understand the allocation of increasing tuition fees at a time when the university was facing a financial deficit. His retort has been firm against the university’s charges and the ongoing investigation. Interestingly, Shieh isn’t alone in his battle; he has gained support from the notable civil liberties organization, the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression (FIRE).
Boosting his public image, his endeavours have captured the interest of social media users, painting him in the light of an unconventional hero. His actions even solicited a response from Elon Musk himself, who simply stated, ‘Wow.’ Shieh found a set of powerful allies rallying around him, his small-scale version of DOGE’s initiative inviting attention from several high-profile figures.
Congressman Troy E. Nehls, an influential member of the Judiciary Committee, voiced his support for Shieh. He shared his intention to send a letter to Brown’s president, kindly asking her to rethink any disciplinary steps against the sophomore. In a self-administered poll conducted by Shieh, a most of the respondents, precisely, 88.3% termed the university’s actions as being ‘unfair.’
Shieh’s situation is intriguing, with impressive support rallying around him and his unconventional approach. Many view him as a champion of First Amendment rights, while others view his approaches with suspicion and concern. It’s interesting to note that he has drawn a lot more criticism than Musk himself, who initiated a similar procedure on a national governmental level.
Yet, Shieh’s actions and the subsequent reactions open a discussion about the appropriateness of his approach. This discourse revolves around the question of whether his approach was the optimal method to address potential financial inefficiencies within his university.
