Suffolk County Cracks Down on Street Racing

Authorities in Suffolk County confirmed the seizure of a 2002 Ford Mustang following traffic violations by the driver, who was reportedly engaged in automobile burnouts. In a span of two days, Suffolk County police issued citations to nine individuals for alleged reckless vehicle activities, such as burnouts and drifting. Seven automobiles were confiscated during this period in the Medford region.

On a recent Thursday evening, the local law enforcement unit responded to an emergency call around 10 p.m. The complaint involved a group that amassed to observe dangerous driving practices on National Boulevard, close to Munsell Road. Witnesses reported to have seen eight vehicles engaged in tire spinning and drifting.

Suffolk County’s Street Takeover Task Force were the first on scene and observed the vehicular antics as reported. The officers proceeded to intercept the vehicles and issued 38 citations to the implicated drivers in response to their reckless driving behavior, as the officials recounted.

The cars seized during the incident were a varied mix – two 2004 Infiniti models and one each of 2005 and 2012 Infiniti. Also part of the collection were a 2010 Camaro and a 2006 Mustang – all were seized as part of action driven by local law enforcement.

The subsequent day, near the intersection of Fairmount Avenue and Poe Drive, 19-year-old Andrew Davanzo from Medford was discovered executing burnouts in his 2002 Ford Mustang shortly after 6:30 p.m. Police were quick to take action.

For those less familiar with street racing lingo, a ‘burnout’ refers to an action where a car is held stationary while its wheels spin at high speed. The resultant friction causes the tires to heat up and generate smoke. This act is usually performed to warm the tires prior to a race, facilitating better grip.

Davanzo was reprimanded with a code violation citation. The violation encompassed illicit speed contests, sideshows, and races, police clarified. Amid these allegations, two traffic tickets were also issued to Davanzo for his indiscretions.

In addition to facing these traffic infractions, Davanzo’s Ford Mustang was also seized by the local police authorities as part of their escalating crackdown on dangerous driving behaviors. Authorities remained stern and committed to ensuring safe driving conditions across all streets in the county.

Andrew Davanzo is slated to present himself at the Central Islip’s First District Court on June 5 over these allegations. While it is surely a predicament any driver would prefer to avoid, the outcome of these violations represents an ongoing effort from Suffolk County to suppress dangerous driving practices in the area.

At this time, there has been no confirmation if Davanzo has solicited legal representation in relation to the charges. As this is an ongoing case, further details may yet become available. However, this incident is a reminder to all of the seriousness such infractions are viewed with by local law enforcement authorities.
