Senator Ted Cruz didn’t hold back on Saturday night, placing the blame for the ongoing federal government shutdown squarely on Senate Democrat leader Chuck Schumer.
“This is a temper tantrum,” Cruz said during an appearance on Fox News’ Life, Liberty & Levin. “Chuck Schumer is shutting down the government because he’s terrified of being primaried by the radical left.”
Cruz explained that the actual mechanics of a so-called “shutdown” are far less dramatic than portrayed. “Roughly 83 percent of the government keeps operating,” Cruz said. “The military, law enforcement, Border Patrol, ICE, Social Security — all continue. What stops are non-essential items like the Smithsonian and some NIH programs.”
According to Cruz, Democrats are holding up a continuing resolution because they’re demanding taxpayer-funded health care for illegal immigrants — something he says Americans clearly oppose.
“We all remember the Democrat debate stage,” Cruz said. “Every single candidate raised their hand saying they support free health care for illegal aliens. That’s what this is really about.”
But Cruz says even that isn’t the whole story.
“Chuck Schumer allowed the government to stay open months ago, and his far-left base went ballistic. Now he’s terrified AOC or some socialist nobody is going to run against him,” Cruz said. “So he’s throwing a tantrum and shutting the government down to score political points with the radical wing of his party.”
Cruz added that President Trump’s budget plan is constitutional and responsible, aiming to rein in out-of-control spending while prioritizing national security and border enforcement.
“This isn’t about governing anymore,” Cruz said. “This is about Democrats refusing to cooperate with anything Donald Trump does. They’d rather burn it all down than let the country move forward.”
Cruz concluded that the government will reopen “the moment Schumer’s tantrum ends,” calling the entire spectacle “political theater” designed to cover up the Democrat Party’s hard-left transformation.
